  1. I know loads of people have asked this but I cant get a simple answer.

When can I buy a 04 DA group for the frame I'm building up?

Will shops get it before Performance and Jensons and the like?

    cheers,

    cheers,

Colorado Cyclist has it now. For some reason they don't list the whole gruppo - just some individual components - this one is for the crank - only in 170 or 175mm, other sizes are "backordered".

$366 not including crank bearings - whew!

Hi-Tech in San Diego's sent three sets out the door already, and has another on their display case.

Your LBS may not want to order the set without someone paying them for it first...

Let's see... For $366, I can walk into a bike shop and buy a decent quality, complete bicycle, or
buy one Dura-Ace crank that's lacking enough parts to be installed into a frame! What a deal.

What shop can you buy a "decent" quality complete bicycle for $365? By decent, I mean one that won't
fall apart in one or two years.

Well, we have two complete sets, except for just one little item... no cranks! Everything but
cranks. Kinda makes them difficult to sell.

Perhaps not road bikes but there are plenty of decent bikes out there in that price range.

Seems like the cranks would be the one item folks would want to upgrade first since they look so different and wouldn't involve any compatibility problems with 9-speed. Upgrading the shifters, derailleurs, and cassette for a 10-speed system would run around $750 in parts exluding the hub or wheel so someone looking for a piece of the excitement might think a $400 crank and bottom bracket replace would be a good deal.

Maybe I'll just fill in my crank spider cut-outs with putty and get some crankarm Dura Ace decals to cover up all my heel scuff marks - much cheaper.

  10. The new Dura Ace is now available!!! E-mail me if you are interested. [email hidden]. I will sell the complete groupo for $1250.00 no hubs. The 10speed will be compatable with the old 9speed hubs. Let me know who is interested.

    Thanks,
    Chris

This assumes you like the look of those cranks! There are many who think the DA 10 cranks are some
of the UGLIEST cranks every designed. Yes, they may be "stiffer" and more "rigid"; Yes, combined
with the BB (another $35 btw), they may be 30 GRAMS LIGHTER. But at $400 for crank and BB, these
things are UGLY! Of course, YMMV, in which case, enjoy. Personally, I think the biggest improvement
in DA 10 is the hubs, especially the rear. If its as quiet as previous Shimano hubs, with its
oversized axles and lightweight, it looks like a winner....

The old Magic Motorcycle/CODA 900 cranks offered the same benefits, hollow light weight cranks with
an oversize BB and outboard bearings, 10 years ago. The current Cannondale Hollowgram cranks are
also similar. The finish on the DA cranks does look prettier, to me at least.

There's virtually no performance difference between 105 and D-A

Then is there a performance difference between 105 and Ultegra?

    Dave

Nothing that will lose you a race. Most racers will accept that the difference between 105,
Ultegra, and D-A comes down to price and weight. You pay an awful lot of money to get a small
weight loss. Durability of the parts seems to be a wash, though the new crank/BB design probably
offers real benefits for clydesdale riders (paging Jobst and Chalo...).

The iconoclasts like Sheldon (and from a practical point of view, me: I'm running a recent Sora
brifteur on an otherwise 1990-ish 105 bike for my good machine. The rain bike is a Bianchi that's
about to get a substantial Shimano 600 transplant) suggest that there's nothing wrong with any of
the Shimano road groups from Sora on up. The only recommendation against Sora is its different
(worse for most, better for some) shifter design and that it shifts only 8 speeds. Also, Sora and
Tiagra use square-taper BBs, though serious students of the bottom bracket can source an ISIS
spline design, perhaps even in preference to the 105/Ultegra stuff.

The one-sentence summary? D-A/Ultegra for sponsors, 105 for racers, and Tiagra for everyone else.

There is one *advantage* of getting DA over the other shimano groups, the warranty. Buying DA gets
you a 3 year warranty; all other shimano groups get a 2 year warranty. Necessary? Maybe not. But,
since STI shifters cannot be rebuild if they breakdown, also assuming WD-40 flush doesn't work, then
a 3 year warranty, at least for the STI shifters, maybe necessary.

I have a lot of Shimano stuff. It never breaks. One Shimano thing I haven't used is STI.

I'm of the same mind as Ryan. I think what he said about Shimano applies to Campy too:

Mirage works fine. Veloce's metal shifters feel a little nicer. Centaur/Chorus/Record get a little
lighter, and prettier, for *a lot* more money. Other than that, they all work pretty much the same.
