That won't help because the usual replaceable track ends use stainless stel
inserts (which you won't pick up with a magnet) which you replace if/when
they get too chewed by wheel changes.. you should be able to see if there's
an insert because they'll be screws holding it in... and it doesn't look
like it. :-(

Sorry, I don't like your new bike cause no stainless steel inserts = put the
frame in the bin in a years time or so if you ride track, use a warm up gear
and different training and racing gears and so have to change wheels a lot.
If you're riding it around as a singlespeed on the road playing messenger
games it's be great, not sure about its suitability as a long-term track
frame.

The other equally 'inappropriate track ends material choice award' goes to
Felt's track frame.....(I've seen a few of them with modified washers on the
track ends to try to stop the wheel from slipping back into the grooves
chewed into them by the axle nuts - not far from the bin or getting someone
try to retrofit some proper track ends on!

Here's what half a season of regular vicious training and racing wheel
changing (on a sprinter's bike) does to stainless steel inserts...

If I were you I'd make sure the axle nuts have got higher-quality flat (not
knurled) floating washers, and that they stay well greased in the washer

I wasn't aware of that, but now am, thankyou. The frame has a lifetime
warranty, so if/when it does [censored] itself (I will be racing it, it's not
a street bike) I expect Trek will have to replace it. Enough times,
and they'll revise the design.

As a fix for it, I imagine it would be possible to add a steel dropout
cover for it without too much difficulty.

They already know me pretty well after the (still ongoing ...) issue
with the Bontrager alloy freehubs/10sp cassette problem, Mark Gardner
knows me pretty well now 🙂

Wanna bet? Other half rode the Sydney Friday winter track last week, Vic
State Titles last year, QLD state titles this year.... next time I'll be
taking my bike, sick of watching and changing gears for others.... Have bike
will travel :-P
