Bike rims and wheel building.

An Alex DX32 has long been considered a very good unicycle rim in both
19" trials, and 24" Muni. Both are bike rims. I think most uni rims
have been/are bike rims. Recently KH has come out with some unicycle
specific rims, but some bikers are using them. There is really no
difference. Even the Surly Large Marge rim was built for bikes.

That makes sense. My assumption has always been that a unicycle
manufacture would look for shapes and strength qualities that don't
matter to all bike rims, but would to all unicycle rims.

There is no such thing as a purely unicycle rim I don't think, apart
from maybe considering a KH rim a unicycle rim. But yeah you can use
any bike rim on your unicycle.

What about the rim on a coker? I know they make a bike now but wasn't
it originally for unicycles? 😄

Coker originally made their 36" wheeled bicycles it was much later
somebody fitted one into unicycle frame, Coker saw the idea and then
started making unicycles with 36" wheels.

The airfoil 36" rim was specifically made for unicycles though the same
profile rim has been used in smaller sizes for bicycles.

To go back to topic any bicycle rim can be used for a unicycle but
strength can be more of an issue for a unicycle wheel than on a bike,
also unicyclists favor wider rims (with the exception of racing
unicyclists) as they give the tire more volume

I was going to say what has already been said, that until recently this
would have been a no-brainer as there wasn't any such thing as a
"unicycle rim." The airfoil rims were specifically intended for
unicycles (but could upgrade the Coker Monster bike as well). I have a
KH rim on my 29er, but don't know if that's a repurposed bike rim or
what.

In other words, there isn't any difference. Same goes for tubes,
pedals, most tires, clamps, etc. Schwinn and others have made special
tires for unicycles since the 70s or earlier.
