I've been thinking over the last couple of days.... where to go on holiday
next year? Let me give you some background...
For the last few years I've gone away with an organised tour company that
supplied support/mechanic/route notes. That company has ceased trading at
the start of this year which left me with a bit of a gap. I did a CTC tour
thing this year, which was good, but they got the distances quite badly
wrong (e.g. original spec of 60-80 k turned into more like 100 k on
paperwork, which turned into more like 80 miles in real life.) When I (and
the friend I went with) realised that that was happening we broke a couple
of days up (it was supposed to one day on, one day off) and just headed off
with a map and a vague idea of where we were going to camp for the night.
And those little adventures were my favourite part of the trip, so I'm
thinking about whether I should be doing the same thing next year.
Now I'm thinking that I could ask various people that I've met on other
holidays if they fancy the idea and I believe that I could certainly attract
a few people, but one of the best things about the organised tour thing is
that you get to meet new people. So...
If I were to put something a bit more concrete on here... off the top of my
head something like southern Spain in May next year, completely unsupported,
camping, nothing too strenuous - maybe 40 or 50 miles per day with a couple
of rest days, some idea of the target camp sites (hopefully being able to do
some research beforehand to find out which ones have hot water), then how
many people from urc would be interested?
Obviously, this is just a broad enquiry for now, and I have no idea about
insurance/red tape type issues, but just trying to gain an idea of general
level of interest. Let the flood of responses begin.
