Astarloa takes road race gold with bold solo break

HAMILTON, Ontario, Oct 12 (Reuters) - A bold solo attack on the final climb earned Spain's
Igor Astarloa the road race gold medal at the cycling world championships on Sunday.

Timing his break perfectly, Astarloa roared away from a group of six riders just three
kilometres from the finish of the gruelling 258km race and held on to win by five seconds from
compatriot Alejandro Valverde, who claimed the silver.

Peter Van Petegem of Belgium completed the podium taking the bronze ahead of favourite and
World Cup champion Paolo Bettini of Italy in a sprint to the line.

It is the second gold medal of the championships for Spain, Joana Somarriba becoming the first
woman from the country to be crowned a cycling world champion with her victory in the time
    trial on Wednesday.
