That is why I am trying to drag some others over to ARBR (with not much

Many of the former members of ARBR have fled to BROL, a moderated website

In general moderation is the kiss of death for most newsgroups,
especially since if I remember correctly[1] the software depends on
working email addresses. (i.e. all posts to the group get sent
to an email address for approval, I suspect most usenet posts
with non-functional From fields get put in the SPAM bucket long
before they get to the moderators... ) Unless the moderators
spend the time and effort to setup and maintain automoderation

Excellent post Booker. I actually learned a few things that I did not know

Probably moreso than most small groups, since if someone does decide to
read ARBR, they're met with endless nonsense from a certain crackpot who
posts about almost anything *except* recumbents, so that ARBR functions
    as a small, misnamed rec.bicycles.soc

I stay on a very limited number of threads, mostly off-topic, and do not
ever interfere with on-topic posts. Your objection simply has no foundation
in fact or truth. I am at a loss as to why others do not flock to ARBR since
it is the only Usenet (unmoderated) group devoted to recumbent bicycles
exclusively. Am I such an ogre that I would scare off others?

I note the same phenomenon with Mike Vandeman on RBS. He stays on a limited
number of threads which are clearly labeled and does not interfere with
topics that do not interest him, yet others do not seem to want to post
there. Very mysterious to say the least.

Look at the *volume* of your nonsense posts as a share of the total
traffic in ARBR -- you do literally flood the group with junk.

    where I'd find a better signal-to-noise ratio.

If that were true, it would be a welcome improvement. His behavior
*has* improved since he repeatedly crashed email lists with mailbombs,
but the total volume of his off-topic threads dwarfs all the on-topic
    threads.

Dedicate to recumbent bicycles??? Are you serious??? You mean that
ARBR is the only newsgroup primarily dedicated your unrestrained ego
and your monotonous mantra. ARBR has become your cyber-playpen and you
have difficulty understanding why others don't flock here??? You're

But that is irrelevant. I stay on just a few threads at any one time. That
is the critical distinction, not the number of posts.

Actually, Mike Vandeman is NEVER off-topic, unlike me. He is pretty much a
one-note Johnny, but he is on-topic all the time. Others can post to RBS on
other topics and I am sure he will not interfere with those discussions
anymore than I would. I simply don't understand your objections.

Jon Meinecke, a member of ARBR who I don't much like for several reasons, is
nevertheless right when he says a newsgroup is what we make of it. If you do
not like my posts, then post your own messages and let other also go and do
likewise. A newsgroup needs hundreds of posters in order for it to thrive.
Neither Mr. Vandeman nor I will ever interfere with topics that do not
    interest or concern us.
