The bait has been set for bicycle thieves at the University of
Toronto's downtown campus.
Under a program called Bike Bait, several bikes with global
positioning tracking beacons have been placed across the campus.
"There's a lot of excitement about this," said Special Const. Peter
Franchi of the U of T police force.
The beacons are attached to the bikes, but police aren't saying where
— or what they look like and how many bikes have them.. . .
.. . .When one is stolen, a beacon on the bike will signal to campus
security that a theft has taken place.
In minutes, officers will be dispatched to apprehend the thief, while
campus security will be able to track the bike through a computer
system.
The system can track the direction, speed and distance travelled by
the bike.
"It can track a stolen bike within two metres of its location,"
Franchi said.
