I stripped my rear derailer hanger, so I'll be fitting a Dropout Saver (I just picked up my bike from the LBS, who said they couldn't fix it, and didn't seem to have ever heard of a Dropout Saver)
Just one thing I'm not sure of: to use a DS you're supposed to drill the hole out to 15/32 (which is 11.91mm) but I only have metric drill bits and don't really want to buy an imperial set for just one bit that I'll probably never use again.
Can anyone say if a 12mm hole would be just as good?

sure. it was probably meant for 12mm anyway, but being as we can't seem to get our heads around adopting the metric system, the manufacturer just recommends the nearest standard equivalent to avoid brain damage. drill and be happy.

It's hard to drill a hole within a tolerance of 0.1 of a millimeter, so it's OK.

While I'm here, is there any difference between gear and brake cable inner? (I know there is for outer!) I'll need a new cable when I put the RD back on, and the stuff I have in my bits box is labelled for brakes. I can't imagine why it wouldn't also work for gears though, unless it is thicker?

Brake cable ends won't fit in shifters. There are probably exceptions to this rule, but that is a pretty good assumption until you've proven otherwise for your specific combination.
I had exactly this problem recently-- the cylindrical ferrule on the end of the "universal" 1.5mm cable was far too big to fit where the gear cable goes in a Campag Ergo shifter.
So then I sent off for a "Campagnolo compatible" 1.2mm cable (the correct diameter anyway), but they sent me a "Shimano compatible" 1.2mm cable instead.
Perhaps Shimano also use 1.2mm for gear cables, I was under the impression Shimano was 1.5mm everywhere.
Anyway, the ferrule was still a bit too big, so I just filed it down a bit.
