As skrobo's picture illustrates, there's a lot of upper body motion
involved in a rolling hop... to gain some upward momentum you need to
fling your torso / free hand upwards when you take off. To prepare,
lower your torso just before you take off.
As for pedal position, it doesn't matter where the pedals are if you
use your body to take off. When riding muni you rarely have the chance
to take off from your preferred position, so developing the skill to
take off from any pedal orientation is crucial. Until you get that
skill, try to take off with your back foot between 6 and 9 o'clock...
it's all a matter of personal preference.
To get a little extra oomph in your takeoff, try and tap the pedals
downwards with your toes just as you take off... like you were doing a
side hop. This compresses the tire and gives you a little more upward
momentum as you begin to fling your torso upwards.
To add airtime to your rolling hop, you need to tuck. Suck those knees
and feet up towards your chest, throw the wheel out in front of you.
The higher you get the wheel the more airtime you'll get. Don't worry
about the landing so much... as long as you have sufficient speed going
into the hop you'll stick the landing no matter how far forward the
wheel is when you land.
You can also practice the tuck doing a static forward hop or a sidehop.
Getting the wheel out in front of you is crucial to getting more
clearance from your hop.
As for the sidehop, I don't see you leaning very far into the hop.
Think of it as falling sideways, and just before you completely lose
your [censored] and fall on your face, tap the pedals (as hard as you can) to
compress the tire, then do the hop. Again, fling your torso upwards...
but angled towards your desired landing. Tuck the wheel underneath you
to stick the landing. The more you fall sideways, the more you have to
tuck, but it'll come naturally.
Practice! Good luck.
