  1. AEROSPACE ON 2 WHEELS: LIGHTWEIGHT AND STRONG from The New York Times

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 20 - When the American bicycle racer Tyler Hamilton took a tumble and broke his
collarbone last summer on the second day of the Tour de France, it turned into a publicity windfall
for the bicycle maker who was one of his sponsors.

During the remaining three weeks of the race Mr. Hamilton nursed his injured shoulder to a
fourth-place finish riding a bike from the Toronto company Cervelo Cycles that was made almost
entirely from carbon fiber, an aerospace industry material that is remarkably light and strong.
Carbon fiber, a composite material created by chemists in the United States early in the 1960's, is
now used extensively in aerospace applications and increasingly in sports equipment like racing cars
    and sailboats.

The material also has shock absorbing qualities that reduced the potential bone-rattling vibrations
that might have forced the injured Mr. Hamilton out of the race. snurl.com2qap

And so there you have it - the NY Times living up to its well-earned reputation... "never let the
truth stand in the way of a good story".

OTOH, I guess they're no worse than 90% of the bike magazines. ;-)

Is that true? Every country seems to claim every invention for its self.

Anyway - hardly news then is it? Carbon fiber "went big" with tennis + fishing equipment in the
early 80's and made all the difference to human powered flight back then too.

Ya gotta love when a company press release is run as a story...

We've got to be close to the 20th anniversary of the first Carbon fiber bike ... anyone
    know for sure?

Not a right-wing ditto head, but always annoyed at the self- righteously wrong. Here's a page with a
transcript of the actual quote ("I took the initiative in creating the Internet"😉 on CNN, plus other
    resources re the quote.

No affiliation, it took about 15 seconds on Google to find.

  9. I'm also annoyed at the self-righteously wrong. So...

First, Gore didn't say he 'invented' the internet - that 'quote' itself was invented by ditto-heads
    - read the page you referenced, which is a debunking of the claim that he ever said that.

Second: Also quoted in the page you reference is
    interesting-people.orgmsg00052.html by Vincent Cerf
and Robert Kahn, who *can* reasonably claim to have invented the internet, and who support Gore's
    *actual* claims

It's usually a good idea to read past the headlines.

    [Markoff writing about carbon fiber]

The New York Times has run several Interbike stories. Every year, there's some stretch for a news
hook. Last year, I think, it was commuter bikes. So there were quotes from Joe Breeze and such. This
year it's carbon fiber. What's going on? Well it's simple, actually.

John Markoff, a good NYT technology reporter, goes to Interbike for the same reason a lot of us want
to go. He likes bikes. But in order to get his bosses to pick up the cost, he needs to produce an
article. Or so it seems to me.

Note how many people he quotes who live (or lived) in the San Francisco area. Since he lives and
works around here, seems he quotes the folks he already knows. He's not doing investigative
journalism in Vegas. He's having fun. Or so it seems to me.

Good journalism? Abuse of affilation? Harmless lark? Something else? Don't know, but Markoff's a
bike rider. I don't ride with him or know him, but we know some people in common.

Well past the 20th anniversary. Closer to the 30th anniversary maybe. Raleigh, sometime in
    the 1970's?

Pfui. That is *so* last millenium. I want some of that "white carbon":
    velonews.com5022.0.html

"The glistening, reflective white carbon was one of the themes of the Milan show. Bianchi's Luna
uses it in the frame, fork, stem, bars, cranks and seatpost."

  14. New material? The article said it was developed in the 60s. And Ive seen it used for bicycles since
    the 70s (Graftek) at least.

    No, it's not new.

Yeah, my main goal was to point to the actual quote: "I took the initiative in creating the
Internet". Usually when I've seen people say things like "ditto heads" in relation to this quote,
they're unaware of the actual portion behind the quote.

You can see how the "ditto-heads" took license with it. Not the first time on either side of an
    issue, but wrong.

The quote itself is pretty self-aggrandizing: a _ton_ of people contributed to creating the
Internet, and as a tech guy I think more of the people doing the innovating than the
    political climate.

Don't recall a Raleigh carbon then, but the Exxon Graftek debuted in 1975 or thereabouts. Well
before the Raleigh Team Reynolds 753 (1980?) but several years after the Speedwell Titanium (1972).

Grafteks were carbon-wrapped aluminum tubes glued into stainless steel lugs. Various brake bridge
designs sometimes stayed in place, sometimes not.

Exxon also offered carbon-wrapped wallpaper over a steel fork. Some things never change.

It struck me that it was just a badly formed sentence. He said it once, and was stumbling over his
words. Its not as if it was a repeated claim, in an actual pre-prepared speech, or other prepared
statement. With a tiny change in that wording it describes what he seems to have done - "backing the
right horse" and getting money into it to get things moving.

OTOH it other candidates have managed to say that the WW2 holocaust happened in the USA
