  1. Okay, well, not really a detox. Drinking a bottle of wine right now and just
had a chinese. However, didn't go the pub for copious amounts of lager.

Just wondering exactly what I can do to get down from 16.5 stones in just
under a month. I have been to the gym two nights on the trot and plan to go
on a near daily basis. The gym work was a pretty sweaty cycle for half an
hour and then a short run (I'm a bad runner) and some weights work.

If I do this every day, will it make a noticeable difference? I plan to
increase the run by 1 minute every day and increase the intensity of the
cycling as and when comfortable. (I did fat burning riding I think, 3 mins
    comfortable/3mins near max x 5).

I mainly want to just lose weight .. I guess it has to be all over, but I've
put some on over Christmas & New Year. I mainly want to lose around stomach
and around the face. Any other exercises I should consider?

(I'm guessing sit-ups and crunches will be recommended).

    Thanks

No chinese (well some dishes are OK wilth boiled rice), no wine, low fat
diet and cycle for at least an hour each day for the month, and if you don't
    cheat you'll notice the difference.

  3. Eat less, move more.

Fill your belly with cheap fart foods.

Don't exercise to bonk levels as you will binge out on carbs and/or feel
    grotty.

Walking burns fat better than many activities, is cheap and possibly
less boring than a trip to the gym.

Fat is often first lost from the face and belly with any diet.

Woops, so all the good work tonight went to waste? Well, it was raining
horrid and I had to get out of the rain. Chinese or pub, chinese or pub?

Detox has been discredited anyway so I would worry about not doing it.

Eat fewer pies it's as simple as that....having said that despite best
efforts to lose weight I have only lost a couple or three stones over the
past three years despite being out and about on my bike fairly regularly.
It's quite simply my ability to eat two tatties more than a pig that gets in
the way of weight loss. I keep telling myself that I've gained muscle bulk
and lost some fat but the density of muscle is greater than that of fat so
my weight loss isn't a great as it might have been. I know I'm conning
myself. But if you are serious baout losing weight, a chinese and a bottle
of wine is not the way to go about it :-)

Eat fewer pies and more salad. I am! I'm aming to drop three or four stone
before my summer tour in August - I'll still be several stones heavier than
you after my weight loss. I have dropped crisps, biscuits, pies and cakes
from my diet and replaced them with fruit and veg. I've also stopped going
into corner shops and supermarkets when i'm hungry as I invariable buy junk
    to feed my hunger.

Do ahve a look at the exercise food balance. Some folk make the ,istake of
upping the exercise without altering their diet whereas if they increase
calory expenditure *and* decrease calorie intake, the weight loss will be
more rapid. I'm tempted to say 'I'll race you' but have thought better of
    it.

My weight loss target is to assist my ability to complete some AAA rated
Audax events this summer and to reduce the effort needed when pedalling a
fully laden touring bike. Ok I'll be healthier too.

    Good luck!

You don't say how much weight you want to shed but assuming it's a
reasonable amount then try this. Eat half the amount you currently eat.
Avoid the obvious foods such as fried food, McDonalds, KFC etc etc. Eat
plenty of fruit and vegetables and then eat some more. Cut out the
booze. Forget the weights for the time being. Get on the bike for
periods longer than half an hour; an hour and a half four times a week
would be much better. Be sure to warm up (easy cycling is a good way)
for at least ten minutes before you start any real exertion. Stretch
(properly...) before you start. Take a bottle of water on the bike and
start drinking after 30 minutes. Be careful with running if you are not
fit and familiar with it as it's much easier to hurt yourself running
than on the bike. Sit ups are good, but start gently and slowly build
up the number you are doing. Don't try to excecise now with memories of
how fit you once were, treat your body gently; it's the only one you
will ever have. Oh, and did I mention that you should eat plenty of
    fruit and vegetables...?

Come back here with an update once a week for mutual encouragement...
    Hope this helps.

    Sound advice. I would add:

    1. Set yourself a goal
    2. Drink more water generally. The body can retain water if you are
generally not hydrating yourself properly - so stick with water over
    alcohol!
    3. Keep a log. I don't get too discouraged by putting weight on, but I
am highly encouraged by seeing a downward trend in my weight spreadsheet ;-)

That's the problem with what you are doing. Just trying to lose weight
in a month is a waste of time if you don't, in the process, change the
lifestyle habits that have resulted in you getting to your current
weight. You'll just put it all back on at the end of the month. Far
better to lose it more slowly and adapt to a healthier diet and more
"natural" exercise that will stick. By natural exercise I mean not the
gym - the average sticking time for gyms is measured in months whereas
you need something that you will keep doing. Cycle commuting is a good
option as it uses the time you have already allocated for getting to
work and its much easier for it to become part of your daily routine
(its also good for burning off work stress induced adrenaline at the end
    of the day).

Up to a point... while the above is true in many cases, if your
particular personality wants to see Real Action in order to keep going
(guess how I know this! ;-)) then a sharp weight loss /can/ be a good
way to go, but as noted here you do need to change your habits as well
or it *will* go back on.

    Quoted message said:

A bit of both, perhaps? The "I am losing a big chunk fast" period will
benefit from maximum exercise, natural exercise can then take up the
slack when you're at the keeping it off phase.

Different things work for different people. My personal enemy is
snacking, and the way I work is I find it easier to cut them out
*completely* than to cut down. You know yourself best, so tailor your
    programme to yourself.
I need to trim off a couple of Kgs after the festive period, it will be
zero snacks, probably cut lunch, light breakfast, standard main meal and
no pudding and work a bit harder than usual at my lunchtime swim. My
initial weight loss (few years ago now, a couple of stones) was glass of
juice for brekkie, small main meal (making sure it had a good mix of
fibre, vitamins and proteins to keep things going) and nothing else, and
as much exercise as I could fit in. Was losing 1 Kg every 3 days, which
obviously one doesn't want to sustain! After the initial drop, evened
back to a sustainable eating level and continued with more exercise than
before I started, but less than at the peak.
I occasionally (as now) need to trim off a Kg or two, and have taken
another biggish (1 stone) lump off using a similar system to the first
    big drop.

The key is a management system that works for *you*. The reason there
are so many published diets is that not one of them works for /everyone/
because the management system is something some people don't get on with
(i.e., I know I can lose a big chunk because I did, but I could never
have done it on the Atkins, though lots of people have). But they all
boil down to "less fuel in and/or do more", and beyond that they're just
ways to organise a formal system of doing that. A formal system is
something you can steer by, and is very useful. I personally find that
scales are a Big Help too, especially if you're losing a chunk fast and
    can see progress over days.

You will damage yourself doing weights every day, you sould only do them two or three times a week on alternate days at most, that type of muscle exercise requires recovery time, plus remember muscle weighs more than fat.

For some values of "weights" quite possibly, but it covers a /very/ wide

The gym is always there as it's part of my tennis club. I do play other
    sports.

The weight has been purely from beer intake, far too much over indulgence.

I disagree the problem was "with last night". That isn't a habit. I rarely
have chinese takeaways, but have been craving one for weeks and decided
"well I;ve been to the gym, it's better to have done that and eat it, than
    not to have".

My question is what I can expect to lose in a month.

I've been a member of quite a few gyms and have been through numerous
    inductions.

The great thing is the body tells us our limits. Yesterday my body told me
to lay off my thigh's having done some weights off it. I could still cycle
but no extra weights, so I did upper body stuff. Today it's telling me to
relax on the upper body stuff, so I'll probably work thighs and mid again.

Of course I will take some time off .. probably Sunday ... and I'll go for a
    real bike ride.

I find the gym cycle a lot easier at the moment due to the wind and rain.
However the seats aren't comfortable and a part of me always becomes numb.

  18. elyob said:

20 minutes walk is worthwhile though. Or you could cycle there (or
back) by a non-direct route, perhaps taking in some shopping or the like
so there's something useful to be doing with it.

I managed 20 lbs in a month with a combination of less food and more
exercise. After that I tailed off, working more gradually to a
sustainable regime. Subsequent trimming or steps down have been rather
    slower (and deliberately so).

That's not impossible, 1 mile is just the shortest distance you can

How much are you planning to loose? I'm about the same weight, 236lbs,
but I'm only trying to loose about 20lbs to get down to 8% body fat. My
plan is about a pound a week, it is possible to do more, but I'm not in
a great rush to loose it. I excercise every work day in the gym,
weights and cardio and ride on the weekends. Every session is about an
hour and I'm trying to burn about 1000 calories in that hour ( I
usually average about 850-900 according to my polar watch). Your plan
for the gym sounds fine, how much time to you have at the weekends for
    longer rides (> 1hr)?

Beer is your biggest enemy, but a glass of wine (or two) isn't going to
    hurt.

Don't cut your food intact by half, unless you've been gaining a lot of
weight recently. If you've been around the same weight for some time,
then your calorie intact may only be slightly too high and an increase
    in exercise may counter this.

Drink lots of water. At work I always have a glass of water at my desk.

Don't try and stretch cold muscles before a work out, that can cause
injury. Warm up first (walk, jog, light spin) and then stretch. For me
that's about 10 minutes into an hour workout.

Walk more at work. I have a desk job, but I take any chance I get I go
for a walk around the office, like, use the stairs and not the lift,
send hardcopy to a printer on another floor, walk the long way around
to meetings, park further away from the entrance.

Love handles are the hardest to shift. I found a great exercise on the
web, you'll need a mat and a medicine ball...

    14. Seated Oblique Twists with Medicine Ball

Sit on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
Hold a medicine with both hands directly out in front of you, twist to
your right and place the ball on the ground behind you.
Quickly, but smoothly, turn to your left to retrieve the ball and
repeat for the desired number of reps.
Repeat the process for the left side.

    laters,
