Shin-only or Shin/knee armor?

I like shin and knee because the amount of times i've hit my knee while
trying to hickflip is just not funny but luckily i was wearing shin and
knee guards.

I like both, the 661 4x4 is what I have, and I really like it. If you
are going to have a shin pad, you might as well have a knee pad as well
in case you fall or what not.

I have knee guards and soccer shin guards, but I really want some 661
4x4s or the new KH guards. So, I'm going to wait and see what
everything will cost and what the new KH ones look like

easiest to have it as a single piece. can't tell you how man times the
4x4s have saved me from some bad stuff.

Agreed. Usually I suffer knocks at the nook of my knee (by hitting the
frame), shins (pedals) and back of my legs (pedals). Also, if I'm
learning new stuff, there's always the chance of tripping over the
pedals and skidding 2 meters on my knees. One-piece guards are more
convenient.

yeah, on a muni ride recently, I fell and landed on my knee on a rock.
luckily I had my 4x4's on over my knees, but even through that padding,
I still bruised up my knee pretty badly, and it would have been worse
without.

I have shin only. They are the 661 4x4s but the knee part bugged me so I
cut the knee part off, sewed the top back together and then I sewed
another velcro strap to the top. They are nice but are pretty beaten up
now.

At the trials competition at CMW I was wearing them under my jeans and
apparently that wasn't good enough because there was no knee protection
so I borrowed someone's KH leg armor and wore those of over my chopped
4x4s and I actually didn't notice them. The KH armor seems more
comfortable to me than the 661s.

just shin guards is the way to go
you almost never hit your knees. (i never have)
of course it is almost a right of passage to have knee/shin guards for
a trials rider

actually i lied. I have hit my knees on the crown it was not while I
riding a proper frame. it was a nimbus 2 24" frame an a 20" wheelset.
never a good combination

I guess you may be an exception, but just about everything you just
said disagrees with what I have seen for other riders and whatg I have
experienced myself. After 5t years of riding, I find my KH leg armor
indespensible. I wouldn't wear it if it were shin only, however. It's
simply not worth it.

I imagine street riders prefer not to use full leg armor since the knee
part could interfere with leg mobility. Not a problem in muni and
trials.

With muni, the terrain/ride type dictates what I use. I wear heavy
knee-shin (one piece) pads for tech DH and high risk, and I use lighter
pads and sometimes shin-only for XC.

My knees take almost every fall impact (palms are a close second). If
I expect to be falling, I wear the heavies. The heavy full pads are
unpleasant on higher milage rides, but high milage and tech DH rarely
intersect around here.

I wear 661 4x4s and I really like them except for one little problem.
Alot of the time when I mess up a unispin or smallspin I will hit the
corner of the frame into the left side of my right knee. The 4x4s are
segmented to protect the front and a bit of the sides but don't protect
the inner sides much at all. It would be nice it the middle segment of
the knee pad would wrap around the knee a bit more and protect it. It
should be possible too without having to restrict movement.

street it is true but with trials you need full flexibility in your
tuck but with natural you will hit your knee more and that is really
bad

i ride trials so my feet aren't coming off the pedals and i just don't
hit my shins so i did away with them
