Quoted message said:At Hazelbrook in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney there are roadworks
taking place. This is at the bottom of a hill with a 40km roadwork
speed limit. The RTA (or whoever is doing the work - must check on
this) have directed cyclists to take a circuitous route including a
short but nasty climb. This might be in place for a number of months.

if you want to have a look.
I have a couple of questions for those more familiar with lobbying etc.
Can the RTA divert cyclists from a public road? I know they can on
private roads such as tollways, but my understanding was that public
roads were open to everyone.
Who would be the best person to write, email, phone to get something
done?
Not as significant an issue as the M2 but as it is on my front door I
thought I might do something.
Are cars allowed to go through the roadworks but not bikes? I really think
it is just an RTA recommendation ie. no legal standing. After all bikes are
road vehicles just like cars and trucks. Any road detour should apply to all
traffic.
If it is a bikes-only detour talk to BNSW and local BUGs for support and
lobbying. This sort of discrimination should not be allowed. Let riders make
the decision about their route choice. Incidentally, I don't know the roads
and hills, but to avoid the extra distance it would be just as easy (from
either direction) to ride along Railway Parade and rejoin the GW Hwy later
on. Maybe that road is a hilly cow. And I know it doesn't help if you're
heading for an intermediate street.
Good luck with the lobbying.
