  1. I picked up a used Campy Mirage crankset with 53/39 chainrings.

I don't use front index shifting and I'm planning or running this with 7
or 8 speed cassettes. I'm not familiar with Campy's pins and ramps or
    chainring spacing.

The 53 tooth chainring is a little tall for me, I've used 49/13 top gears
for years. It looks like Campy had or has 50 tooth chainring for this
crank. If I find a Campy 50 tooth chainring will it work OK with my
    existing 39 tooth chainring.

What about a generic 49 or 50 tooth chainring?

What width chains work with these chainrings?

    Chas.

My understanding is that the pins are "timed" to be positioned around the
ring, so that they line up with in the middle of a link on the smaller ring
(not a pin), and lift it onto the middle of the ramped tooth of the larger
    ring.

If the rings weren't timed to be put together, it might put the roller on
top of the tooth, and it'd take a little while for the chain to snap into
    the gaps properly.

Perfect timing of ramps and pins isn't essential. My triple use a
Specialites TA 28t small ring with a middle designed to lift of a 30t, and
it is only very slightly worse at shifting.

Any ring with a 135 BCD should work, by the way, it doesn't have to be
Campag, but of course the timing will be better if you get a Campag big
ring designed to carry from a 39t. Quite a few makers do rings with that
    BCD.

How can that 53 be much of a problem, given that you
contemplate a 50? My 48/13 high gear is plenty when
what I can spin is the only consideration. Yet, I like
to spill the derailleur and poke along in the tallest
gear sometimes because it requires little effort; hence
I am considering a 53 chain wheel on my 24-38-48 and
    13-23 nine-speed.

To your point: do you want the absolute snappiest
shifting? If not your proposed change will shift slower
but not to frustrate you. For the very best shifting a
    46-49 half-step.

They work pretty well. Stronglight, TA and others make them.

Any. But stick with what your cassette requires.

A smaller ring is nicer when you don't mind having lower top gears. It can
be used more of the time without having to cross the chain over so much.

Your front derailleur will need raising, then may work poorly with such a
    wide range. A 50 or 51 would be better with a 24 granny. (TA make a 51).

Most of my riding is done in the 50-80 inch range. I've been using
    half-step gearing with 45-49 chainrings and 13-24, 13-26 or 13-28 five or
    six speed freewheels for years.

I've switched to crossover shifting with 7 and 8 speed cassettes. It looks
like Campy only made 53 and 50 tooth large chainrings for this crankset. I
don't want to use a 53 tooth chainring for a lot of different reasons.

My questions concerned using my existing 39 tooth chainring with a Campy
50 tooth chainring or another brand of 49 or 50 tooth chainring and how
that will effect shifting with this crank.

I've heard that there can be shifting problems with miss-matched
chainrings that use pins and ramps. Since I wont be using front indexing
how much of a problem is that going to be if at all. Will this crank
friction shift as well as an old fashioned pre index crankset?

    Chas.

Any width chain, the chainrings didn't change in thickness when they
    went from 8s to 9s. I have been using 50/39 for probably 10 years..53
is too tall for just about everybody whether they admit it or not.
Campag has a 50t ring(135mm BCD) from their triple and TA makes CRs
    for 135 from 39 to 56, 1 tooth increments.

Once upon a time, long, long ago, in a galaxy...there were NO pins,

  8. Only Shimano has indexed shifting on the front

You'll have a difficult time finding a "generic" chain ring with the
appropriate bolt circle diameter. Campy would be easier to find and
    perhaps the same price.

Don't worry about ramps and pins. They'll not interefere even if
mis-matched. I had them explained to me this way... Shifting is a wee
bit better if the chain tension is relaxed a wee bit. The ramps are
designed so that the chain moves when the cranks are vertical ("top dead
center", considered a bit of a "dead spot" in the stroke).

The lowest-end Sachs 8 or 9 speed chain will work just fine up front.

  9. Camp has front index on their FB shifters. I have a pair. You need
    the right Camp front der.
I believe that a brand new Mirage 06 crank is only $123, depending on
where you shop. Most chainring for a 130bsd are not cheap. A pair of
Camp chainrings is more then the whole crank, as distributors in the
US only bring in Cen/Chorus/Rec. rings.

Stronglight makes 135 mm bcd chainrings. Go over to the Settle Cycles
    website and look for chainrings. 39, 42, 46, 48, 50, 52, 53, 54, 55
sizes listed. Obviously it does not make economic sense to import
just one chainring. But there may be US places carrying Stronglight
chainrings. Nashbar has the 135mm bcd in 53 tooth. Used to have 39
tooth too. I would guess they were Stronglight brand since other
Nashbar chainrings I purchased were Stronglight. Salsa Cycles shows
    39, 42, 45, 52, 53 sizes on their website. Harris Cyclery shows a few
more Salsa sizes in 135mm bcd.

It's fine with friction or Ergo micro-step front shifters. The ramp/pin
alignment is critical for "Push & Pray" STi shifters but merely
    nice-to-have with other front systems.

But do try to get a ramped and/or pinned outer. It will certainly shift
much more responsively than classic pre-enhancement rings. Which did, by
    the way, work acceptably.

Generally right but why, "have a difficult time finding a "generic"

wear _much_ longer), TA, TA Pro in colors (more than CA), Vuelta
(cheapest, around $30) all from national distributors available to any
competent LBS with a working telephone connection. And an inclination to
    help instead of whine.

    existing 39 tooth chainring.

What about a generic 49 or 50 tooth chainring?

What width chains work with these chainrings?

How can that 53 be much of a problem, given that you
contemplate a 50? My 48/13 high gear is plenty when
what I can spin is the only consideration. Yet, I like
to spill the derailleur and poke along in the tallest
gear sometimes because it requires little effort; hence
I am considering a 53 chain wheel on my 24-38-48 and
    13-23 nine-speed.

To your point: do you want the absolute snappiest
shifting? If not your proposed change will shift slower
but not to frustrate you. For the very best shifting a
    46-49 half-step.

Yes, 39-50 will shift great. Friction shifting my TA
    38-48 chain rings is easy.

Thanks. I have a 53t chainring that I used to use with a corncob freewheel
for flat time trials long, long ago.

    Chas.

    Dear Peter & Chas,

I have a 53-tooth front sprocket. It's worked fine for years on most
of my daily ride with an 11-tooth rear and a glacial cadence.

    Cheers,

Generally right but why, "have a difficult time finding a "generic"
chain ring" ? Campagnolo in 2 grades (VEL-MIR or CEN-CHR, the latter
wear _much_ longer), TA, TA Pro in colors (more than CA), Vuelta
(cheapest, around $30) all from national distributors available to any
competent LBS with a working telephone connection.

Just make sure that the generic one is fully compatible. A Miche chain
ring I bought was thinner than the original Campagnolo, so that the
fixing bolts wouldn't tighten properly. Tried shims between the ring
and the crank, but that just made the gap wide enough for the chain to
get stuck between the rings (though not right at the start), so
eventually I ended up replacing the whole crankset (got the new one
dirt-cheap, otherwise I could of course just have tried with new bolts
    instead).

Only Shimano has indexed shifting on the front
You'll have a difficult time finding a "generic" chain ring with the
appropriate bolt circle diameter. Campy would be easier to find and
    perhaps the same price.
Don't worry about ramps and pins. They'll not interfere even if
mis-matched.

C'mon Andy, if it ain't 'MAILORDER', it doesn't exist...

How is your branch of the industry going to fix that perception? See the mail
order people are really good at getting people's attention and letting them know
what they have available and it is so much that people often don't realize how
much more there is to be had from a real shop. A lot of the, uhh, fancier* shops
don't want to sell anything that the MO guys don't also carry (except for the
bikes that can't go MO) so they help promote the idea that there are only
recent, large, expensive parts available and you should just buy a new bike
    instead of an 8s chainring.

*AKA: Greedy, barely competent yuppie traps.
