I have had a set of Kysrium ES wheels for the past 6 months and after about two months of riding the rear wheel started making a "pinging" noise when I would increase my pressure on a climb. The noise was not from the internal part of the hub, but where the spokes joined the hub flange. It sounded as if you put your fingernail on a spoke and picked the spoke like a guitar string. I took it to my LBS and they adjusted the tension and lubed the spokes where they joined the hub. Worked for a week or so. I took it back and they tried again, worked for a short time. They want to send it back to Mavic for them to look at it. Mavic will take 4-6 weeks and I'm afraid the say there is nothing wrong and just deal with the noise, or that they can't duplicate. Has anyone had this problem or does anyone know how to fix it. I had SL's before these and never had an issue. I like the wheels but I can't stand the noise on every incline.
I have put on 45k miles on different high end Ksyriums and currently ride Campy Ksyrium ES and Ksyrium Tour de france wheels, but have never had this problem. I would torque the cassette, adjust the wheel bearing pre-load and then adjust the spoke tension to the Mavic spec using the Park Tool TM-1 spoke tension meter. If the problem came back, I would check the tension of each spoke to see what changed. I had an intermittent noise that I, and everybody that was riding along side of me, swore was coming from the front wheel. It was coming from my rear Ksyrium TDF. Did everything possible, including replacing all the bearings, to no avail. Replaced the rear axel, although it looked perfect, and it solved the problem. Mavic no longer uses the rear axel they supplied in the rear Ksyrium TDF.
[font=Verdana]Have the same problem, the rear wheel when under load creates noise, once I move up into higher gears the noise appears to stop. Pulled the cassette off and found some play in the inner bearing (bush) on the hub, have just dropped it to the LBS to get their opinion, will let you know result.[/font]

I have this same problem with my SSC SL wheels that I bought in 2004. They have done this twice before and each time ended with a broken (drive side) spoke. That wasn't too much of a problem when I was at the end of my street but when it happened 50km from home I was not happy - the wheel was going round in squares! It has happened again and I am going to get my LBS to check all the spoke tensions and just hope the snap comes at the end of the street.

It sounds like something is "moving" a spoke or spokes under load. I would carefully clean the areas around both ends of the spokes and take a close look for cracks in either the rim and/or hub areas. Also take a reading of each of the spoke tensions and record it. See if the tensions all stay the same after each ride. Also, as other responders have already stated, sounds in a bicycle transmit to other elements. Something in the hub may make spokes "ping".
