Should the thread on carrying guns be removed?

Why let it get to you? I agree there is no releveance between guns and cycling as far as I'm concerned. I've read some of it but haven't followed all of the arguments. I'm a military enthusiast but no, I wouldn't carry a gun when cycling and I don't see the need for it in day to day life. And no, I don't go hunting either although I've fired guns on the shooting range at Singleton army base.
However, why stop the thread if the moderators don't think it needs to be stopped. Others might be enjoying it. I don't care for the thread so I don't participate in it. Simple. Don't like; avoid.
Don't mean to sound rude or anything by what I've said but I just can't agree here. Unless it was truly that offensive, or advocated real harm to others, and led to a great number of complaints then I don't see why it can't remain.

It should go to the soapbox forum.

How about you just don't read the information with in? I bypass threads I have no interest in all the time...No biggie.

I mostly just skip over threads, like this one, in which I have no interest. Consequently, I just don't care.

I have clicked onto it a couple of times just to see what the big deal was and I still don't get it. Spending several hundred dollars to buy something that's relative heavy and which I'll very likely never use, to carry with me on my bike, makes zero sense to me.

It's good for a laugh, a bit of light relief. If you live outside the USA it has no real revelance to your life. Thank God.

It certainly isn't much of an ad for the USA as a place to cycle or live.

But there is some funny stuff there both intentional & otherwise.

So leave it there.

The USA is a great place to live and cycle. I have not ventured into the thread because I don't carry a gun when I ride my bike because I'm afraid I might want to shoot some one who came with in inches of ending my life. Not really.

I do however carry one with me on my off-road adventures both on my motorcycle and in my Jeep. We live near our very pourous border and there are drug runners and illegal smuggers abound.

It's been one of the most popular threads on the forum for a long time. I've posted to it a couple of times (but only mockingly 😉 ). I don't think it should be removed. It's obvious from the title of the thread what the discussion is about. If you don't want to discuss the topic, just don't open it. If anything, move it to the soapbox forum but don't remove it.

A three year old thread with almost 1,500 posts and we just now getting around to killing it because it is inappropriate?

I have ventured into it a time or two but, like the OP here, find it not real relevent to the type of cycling I do. As a result I very seldom will go back.

There are a lot of threads that I enter once, and never go back. They generally have little intrest to many so they die quietly. The gun thread is obviously not one that appears to be dieing anytime soon by natural causes.

What we should do instead is create another thread that will bring the gun issue to light so we can have two debates at the same time. Possibly with a poll.

It would be interesting to see how many different people have posted on that thread and to rank them by number of posts. I'm thinking there is a relatively small number of posters who hold very strong opinions on the subject.

I was shocked to see Bordeaux's name on that thread. He was actually killed while bicycling but a gun wouldn't have helped him.

No offense, but people that say things like that haven't been in a situation wear they've needed one. Tools are made for different purposes. Guns are tools and satisfy their purpose very well. Only a few weeks ago two cyclists in Portland were knocked off their bikes and savagely beaten. It was completely unprovoked. Robbery wasn't the motive, just a group of evil people bent on hurting innocents.

I don't carry a gun simply because it isn't practical. I'm playing the odds that I won't need one. I do carry pepper spray, but it's not too effective against an armed or multiple attackers.

The topic isn't "do you carry a gun" it's "do you carry a gun while cycling"

Some places unfortunately you need to, luckily where I am you don't (ever). Some of the stories I've heard from South Africa about general life I'd be inclined to carry a gun while cycling there!

As all the other posters have said, if you don't like it then don't read it. I'd rather all the mobile phone and shoe adverts gets deleted far faster than they do.

The Creationist/Intelligent Design wackos found them and began flooding them with flames, leading to the wholesale abandonment of the websites. I don't want to see that happening here.[/font]

I run one and moderate on two other firearm boards.

We have an international membership and regularly discuss cycling and bicycle racing in the 'general discussion' forums.

Some folks find cycling topics worth reading and some don't.

To be fair on both sides I think threads with the mention of guns be treated same way as when the F word is mentioned.
