I bought some ergoshift levers on ebay (Centaur) and a rear derailleur (Chorus 10speed) which some would say is a waste as I plan to put them on my old steel commuter (which is outfitted with mid 80's Suntour (great stuff for its day I think as it's still going strong). It's really sad for me as I would have preferred to keep it all original spec but in keeping with Boyle's Law I replaced the brake callipers, (couldn't buy pads anymore) and things kind of spread out from there.
Sorry the question after all that is, now that I have an entire new Campag compatible drivetrain incl rims, chain etc, can I get away with keeping my old friction shift front Suntour ARX derailleur, or should I plan on getting a new 10 speed one of those too?
The only other question is whether or not it is easy to obtain a cable stop for the down tube to run the cables properly (if I am lucky I might be able to cover the hole where the shifters are on the down tube with this)?

Any friction shift front mech should work with any chainrings provided the shapes matchs (which they should unless you've made big changes to the chain ring size).

You shouldn't have too much of a problem. It's the shifters that have all the indexing, the front derailleur is still pretty much the same. I changed mine from 7sp to 9sp and found I needed to use a vise-grip to squeeze the side plates slightly closer together as the narrower chain demands a closer derailleur cage. You'll probably have to do this to get it shifting correctly with 10sp.

No as I understand it these things simply bolt into your down tube gear lever bosses (you do have these on the frame?). Maybe not the ones on this website, its not too clear (?), but have a look at a few bikes in your LBS. Lots do have these bolted-on cable stops, and i'm sure you should be able to get them, or order them in.

I run 8 speed chorus levers onto a Suntour ARX front changer with no problems. To stretch the issue all the way I have a 46/36/26 triple set up which all work perfectly. I am only running 7 cogs on the back. I'm not sure how the ARX front will handle the variation in chainline if you have more than that.
Shouldn't be too hard to find a simple band adapter to provide cable stops on the down tube. These were common for bikes that had the shifters mounted on the stem. For the ability to fine tune the cables it may be better to get some of the units which attached to the braze-ons for the down tube shifters as they have barrel adjusters for cable tension.

If you can't find one locally (a clamp-on cablestop), contact Ridgway's Cycles in Stafford, Brisbane - they have boxes of this sort of stuff and I got one of these items from them. They told me they often help out other bike shops.
