I really want to buy a new MTB bike that is light and cheap. I'll probably mod it by installing city slick tires since most of its use will be on city streets and for commuting purposes. I'm getting too old for road bikes.
I am especially interested in any tips having to do with retailers like Target, Kmart and others. I know a lot of people look down on some of the bikes sold there, but I've gotten some excellent bikes in those places.

I think I've seen the upland. I estimate it was around 30lbs. anything between 20-25 lbs?
My friend spent thousands building up a carbon Trek hardtail that weighs 18lbs. If you want a mountain bike that is in the low 20's, you're gonna have to spend some cash.
The saying in the business is: Strength, lightness, cheap...pick any two! ie. if its light and cheap, it won't be strong. If its light and strong, it won't be cheap etc.
