I guess I am expected to return the compliment and say that all cyclists are
red light jumping idiots. However, I won't because I think some cyclists
are courteous and considerate, others are selfish.

I own a 9 year old BMW. It wasn't me that the OP saw (wrong type), but I'd
behave similarly for cyclists.

Nigel, I'm sorry if my mocking of BMW owners caused you any upset.
Truly; there are enough bad people on newsnet being unkind and I
certainly do not wish to include myself in their number. It really
wasn't directed at you personally, nor indeed at any individual BMW
owner but rather was my inept attempt at a comic response to the OP's
tale of responsible, considerate and compassionate road use which is
rather unusual coming from a BMW. For whatever reason (e.g. my imaginary
"[censored]" exam that prospective BMW purchasers have to sit) BMWs do seem to
be driven by a higher than average percentage of aggressive, selfish and
uncaring people. In fact, this perception is so strong that I (and many
others) would actively avoid the marque at all costs in any future car
purchasing planning. To be frank, I don't even enjoy being passengered
in a BMW. The one time I drove one I felt so embarrassed I couldn't wait
to get out of it... the question I often ask myself as yet another
Beemer passes me inappropriately at warp factor 8 or cuts me up with
reckless abandon is, does the marque attract the type or does BMW
ownership bring out the worst in people? A tricky one that, my internal
jury is still out.

So in conclusion, please accept my wholehearted public apologies for any
offence my post may have caused.

It's very surprising (and a refreshing change) for anyone driving a BMW
to behave in this way. Something about BMWs seems to attract a
particular type of selfish and very aggressive driver. Obviously this
is a generalisation, but a noticeably large percentage of the most
aggressive driving I've witnessed from other road users has been by
people in BMWs, and I first noticed it in Glasgow about fifteen years
ago.

Then you are an exception, and a very nice exception to boot. I'd echo
what others have said about deliberately avoiding BMWs if looking for a
new car. Even in a van I tend to switch to a more defensive mode of
driving if I spot a BMW behind me in the mirrors, as I assume there will
be an aggressive overtaking manoeuvre, quite possibly a dangerous one,
and I'm seldom proven wrong.
