Hi Tomek;

Please don't use a hammer! There are very few bicycle jobs for which a
hammer is the proper tool.

You'll need a thin spanner, generally called a cone spanner to remove
the cones and locknut from one side of the axle. Then the axle will drop
out as it's not attached to the hub in anyway just held in place by the
cones.

Indeed. Initially, I couldn't figure which way to go - to the left or to the
right - but finally it prooved irrelevant. One may hammer out axle with
bearings either way. Thanks!

it's perfectly ok to use a hammer to remove dead bearings. its /not/ ok
to use a hammer to fit new ones.
