  1. Can someone offer suggestions on an appliance that will cook eggs and
also poach them? I bought what I thought would work: Maverick's
Henrietta Hen Chirping Egg Cooker & Poacher that looks like a hen, but
the eggs it "lays" are [censored]. Look at this link below and you will see
    what I am stuck with:

    http://www.qvc.com/detail/ViewOptions.aspx?viewOption=moreviews&item=K6081&tmp=pd&cont=mv&classcode=4285&grpitem=false

The one time I tried to make hard boiled eggs, I was very dissatisfied
with the results. Yesterday and today I tried to make 4 poached eggs
and the results were equally bad. The yellows are very "runny" and
even the whites do not looked cooked enough, no matter which water
level I use. I am going to kill this hen!

Can someone recommend an appliance that works?

    Thanks,
    Rusty

for soft boiling.... you need a sauce pan and water. Boil a large egg
    for six minutes.

for poching.... do soft boiled (see above) - it's easier and tastes
    better.

Yes, I recommend a saucepan and a stove. Or, you could actually try
to learn to use the thing you bought.

In what way? Were they overcooked? Undercooked? Have a green line
around the yolks? Didn't peel easily?

Why not just cook them longer? That'll solve both the problems you
    describe.

The only appliance you need is a tinfoil hat. -aem

It's called a pot and water. Good lord, what did people do before there
    were all these fancy appliances?

I love my Oster egg cooker because I can go to the store and get 3
dozen very fresh eggs and hard boil them and every one will peel
without taking a single piece of white with it. It makes it very easy
to do spur-of-the-moment deviled eggs or eggy potato salad, which I
    like to do.

Each to own, and all that, Jill. You can use your pan and water until
the cows come home, but a super-fresh egg will never peel properly.

I had a Sunbeam - decades old - worked great, so I gave it to my son
and got an Oster. Look for one that isn't a "gimmick" (shaped like a
chicken, etc.). I love mine for hard-boiling very fresh eggs that
peel beautifully; making 4 poached eggs at a time in Teflon-lined cups
that come with, or anything in between. They cook 8 hard-boiled at
    once.

Oops - apparently, Sunbeam egg cookers are now known as Oster egg-
    cookers. They are great. http://www.householdappliance.com/egg_cooker.html

What I wonder is where do people put all these fancy appliances. I guess
there's a reason people need to live in McMansions, to store all this stuff.

I have a small kitchen, so I have to really think about the usefulness of
each item before buying it. Some of my "favorite, must have" appliances are:

    - electric can openers
    - electric jar openers
    - electric iced tea makers

In my mind, a lot of this stuff is "solutions in search of a problem"!

I don't do soft boiled eggs.

To poach eggs I use a pot and some boiling water.

Directions: Get the water boiling.Just before adding the egg get the water
swirling by stiring the water gently. Then crack open and carefully add
the egg. If you like you can crack the egg into a shallow dish then add
the egg to the swirling water from the dish.

Some think a little vinegar in the water helps to keep the eggs together.

There are some 2 dollar+ egg poacher gizmos that you crack an egg into
then lower into the boiling water if you feel poach challenged. These
gizmos hold up to 4 eggs at a time.

To hard boil eggs I use an electrical veggie steamer as I've found this
    method allows for easy peeling.

    Directions: add eggs to steamer basket ensuring only one layer deep;
Ensure the steamer is plugged in and then select 20 minutes on the
timer....go do something else untill you here the 'DING'.

That's why everyone uses days old eggs to make potato salad? It's only been
posted here about a million times.

You don't need any special appliance to cook eggs. All you need is a pan
    with some water in it.

Poached Eggs aren't in the shell. You're thinking soft, medium or hard
boiled. Poached eggs are cooking cracked into boiling water. Usually in
rings that hold their sort of "fried shape" in the water. Such as topped on
toasted muffins to make topped with Hollandaise sauce. You aren't thinking
of poached eggs at all, Nancy2.
