I noticed, at an alarming frequency, that frozen shrimps from the local
grocery store and the warehouse club where I shop have a strange taste.
Actually the "strange taste" is a combination of taste and smell. The
taste is hard to describe. It's mildly bitter(?), like an aftertaste, of
some kind of chemical. I can't associate it with the taste of any kind
of normal food. The smell -- and I know that there's a smell component
to it because I would stop feeling part of the strange "taste" if I hold
my breath -- is suggestive of something I might have smelled (or tasted
in my mouth) in the vicinity of fuel(?). Somewhat subtle, not pleasant
or aromatic, suggestive of chemical but not of any natural food.
(If the "smell" is more intensified, I might describe it as vile.)
Another thing about the strange smell: I don't notice any unusual smell
until I put the shrimp in my mouth and chew it.
The percentage of such problem shrimps in a bag varies. Sometimes there
is none, but more often somewhere between 20% to 40% of the frozen
shrimps have this problem.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Any idea what the strange taste
is? I'm suspecting contamination in the waters where the shrimps were
caught but don't know how to confirm my suspicion.
