  1. It's getting into the cold months now, and when I went out the other day, it was in the low 40's,
and I found my gears were very sluggish to change. REALLY SLOW. Like it would take 5 seconds or so
to shift just 3 gears. So I'm looking for advice in smoothing things out. I opened the thumb
shifter, and all looks clean and well lubed in there, so I'm leaving that alone. I'm wondering if I
can/should take the cables out of the sleeve and clean them? Degrease the derailleurs? Is this a
generally common occurrence and easily rectified, or is it inevitable with the cold?

    Thanks, Matty

I always clean or change my cables and housings before winter sets in. Then depending on how and
where you ride this might have to be repeated again. Of course keeping the drivetrain clean can be a
hazzle. Sometimes I have to clean it once a week.

In subfreezing temperatures I've heard of people bringing lighters to thaw out frozen derailers.

You have to be smarter than a robot to reply.

  3. Clean them and lube them. I ride in sub temp. Like one didgits temps and below that. As for frozen
cables at derail- leur use the same stuff you use in you car locks.

    MTB Ride hard die free.

New cable and housing. Get a teflon coated cable if you can. Don't use any grease on them.
