  1. I took several hundred photos of participants in an adventure race. I
uploaded the pics to imageshack and made them public. Is this ok?

Well if they weren't via that hidden camera in the porta potty it
might be ok, butt as it is you're in deep [censored]...so to speak.

Most likely it is legal and ok, yes, to simply photograph people in
public--you have people participating in a public event, ergo, the
right to privacy is lessened. The whole problem of permission to use a
likeness on the web is another thing. Myself, I wouldn't worry about
it though. Jesus, the web and imageshack and the others, Flickr, etc,
are chock full of photos of people and I am sure the photographers
didn't go around getting permission for reproduction off every
stranger in their photo album pics of Our Fabulous Trip To Disney/
Europe/Spain/Walmart/Costco/the Beach where ever else. I seriously
doubt anyone, except someone from like , say, America's Most Wanted is
going to care or ever even know they are on the web in a mass photo of
    a sporting event.
Worst case scenario: you get asked to take a particular picture down
by some whiner who saw him/herself in it and got freaked out over
    nothing.

Troll or not, it's a legitimate question and when I am out plein air
painting or drawing, the question does come up for me and my other
artist friends from time to time. I've only ever had one [censored] have a
mental fit over me painting or drawing people wandering about in
public, and that person seemed to me to be a drama queen with way, way
too much free time to think up new ways to feel victimized by anyone
handy. (She wasn't recognizably her, unless you count her as the only
brunette of average size, weight and shape on the planet.)
The other thing is, whenever a I or a friend of mine paints a picture
of someone's house( viewable from a public place)/person in a part of
a crowd scene etc, the "My PRIVACY has been violated!!!!" carryon is
pretty much stemming from the same place: they all want a operative
word *free* copy of what you've done, and suddenly the their righteous
indignation and their ever -so patriotic interest in privacy rights
    and the Constitution vanishes.

If it is a legitimate question, it is OFF TOPIC in rec.running
(there must be an appropriate place in one of the talk.* groups)

If it is a legitimate question and you really are concerned, go ask a
    lawyer.
(maybe you could get some free advice at a law school?)

If it is a legitimate question and you are currently being sued, go
hire a lawyer because this is stil OFF TOPIC in rec.running.

Yes sometimes we do wander off path here, but that is usually
following a running related thread. Starting off topic is just not
    appropriate.

I don't know how you got the idea I was possibly needing a lawyer; and
while this may not have been solely related to the *mechanics* of
running, it's a legitimate question as I am sure there are people who
post/lurk here who do indeed take photos at races and those are
related to recreational running; that is the context in which the
question was asked. Running's a fun and community related sport and I
betcha dollars to donuts that there were people who, unknown to you,
saw this who thought, Oh, [censored], I've done that, I've posted pictures
to the net without permission and wondered what the possible
    ramifications were.
I explained the likeliest general situation regarding anyone having a
problem with their photo being taken at a race because I don't know
what state (or even country) the OP was writing from; I only know the
parameters of law in my state. I answered the question as I do know a
bit about it, the OP/troll said thanks, and that was pretty much it
    till you posted.
