Anyone ever come back from a bad knee injury to run again?
I tore my ACL in 1984. Had it scoped to repair torn cartilidge but didn't go through the harsh-at-the-time ACL surgery. Since then I've always had lots of play in my knee and couldn't do cutting sports anymore, but had no problem running on it. I'd have shin splints before I felt knee pain. (Used to do up to 10 miles at around 8 min or less pace.)
In the late 90's, I stopped exercising and my weight ballooned from about 160 to a peak of 220 last year. I'm back down to 180 and shooting for 160's. I feel fit from cycling and weight training but really miss running. Last week I ran 1/2 mile at my gym track and the next day and several days after the knee was really sore. I suspect it has deteriorated over the years from excess weight and wear and running is just not in the cards. Still, would like to know if anybody has had similar experiences and whether they've been able to run again. Also, what did you do to fix the problem? (Surgery, injections?)

Thanks for any comments.
There have been many improvements in technique since your tear. Get it fixed up right now to avoid further knee damage. According to Dr. Gabe Merkin, this is the one knee injury that can't be rehabilitated without surgery.

Yes there has, now they have a really cool, shiny computer graphic to illustrate just how bad the tear is, and just how bad they are going to screwup your knee by operating on it.

Of course Gabe Merkin is an incompetent [censored], and a surgeon, and as we all know surgeons always seem to want to operate...go figure.
