    Another foray into the wilds southeast of here, starting from Tyncwm
    SN769655 at the end of the road past Strata Florida abbey, where there
    is space for a few cars. The habitual drowning in bog did not happen
    on this occasion - a week's dry spell did certainly help... Pictures at

    The outward leg followed the track on the northern side of Cwm Mwyro
    to Garreglwyd, where the stream cascades down a step in the valley's
    topography:

    There weren't many sheep around, although I found proof of their
    previous existence in the area:

    For once most of the water was concentrated in a big natural lake
    (Llyn Gyn) rather than spread over the usual bog,

    although it does turn boggy towards the edge of Tywi Fechan forest.

    The forest itself is just being felled; there was quite a bit of works
    traffic on the forest road. This section was not particularly pleasant
    but at least progress was quick on the forest tracks.

    The way back over the ridge followed a minor path through open grassland
    down to Berthgoed farm and its meadows back in Cwm Mwyro.

    It was quite a contrast between the wild open space around Llyn Gyn
    and the rather industrialised forestry section. Altogether a good
    walk, though I would have routed it differently if I'd known about
    the tree felling...

    Certainly an interesting area, though I must admit to a little bias
    having been born only 5 or 6 miles away. I still know the farmer and
    have been involved in sheep shearing at Garreglwyd which to my knowledge
    has not been occupied since the 70's (possibly unoccupied much longer)
    though it is of course still used as a farm. The photos certainly look
    like Llyn Gynon to me.

    It can be very wet in that area and if you are not careful you can
    easily end up waist deep in a bog!

    Oh, err, map reading accident. I've got a pre-CRoW Act version of
    Tracklogs 1:25k west of Llyn Gynon and a post-CRoW Act version to its
    east. The -on bit would be on the eastern sheet but is missing. The
    name sounded plausible to me, so I didn't question that. Thanks Geoff.

    There is a 20th century metal building by the side of the ruined old stone
    buildings, but even that one is in disrepair. I can imagine that it's
    still used occasionally for sheep shearing or the like but I don't think
    for anything more permanent than that.

    I didn't venture to the east of Llyn Gynon, but it certainly looks a
    lot more severe there, in the Nant Biswail area:
