  1. Am due to visit end of May for 3 days and wondering if any info on
walks this length? I have a young family who are not big walking fans :
( Any info most gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

I just did Helvellyn with my walking m8 and it was the best walk we
ever did in our lives (so far) We are totally hooked on the Lakes
now, as I thought we would be. Wish I lived there 🙁

Round the back of Melbreak and back along the shores of Crummock water.
About 6.5 miles - we used to use it as a loosener when taking parties of
schoolkids from my ex school's field centre,
Park in cark park near Scale Hill Inn NY149216.
If you need any more info just ask

    Roger

ps you are unlikely to meet anyone else on 95% of this route :-)

How about Holme Fell from Yewtree Farm? or Black Fell from the same
    location?

Alternatively Knott Rigg from Newlands Hause?

Or Rannerdale Knotts from Hause Point?

    Or Hen Comb from Loweswater?

    And Catbells from Little Town?

    The list is endless.....

    David.

How about a circuit of Buttermere, it has the advantage of a (short)
tunnel to keep kids amused. The Bridge Inn is good.

I've known people who have moved to the Lakes, and moved out again
surprisingly quickly. The existence of the Lakes themselves is a big
    hint as to the reason!

  9. Hey you guys are really great, I only posted this about 6 hours ago. I
have come online to have a quick surf and lots of you have already
responded. Thank you very much for all of you who have responded thus
far. This is a great group. Any more ideas also welcome. Can't wait to
get back and try these out! Thanks again 🙂

As other have noted, lots of them. When my brood were young, I used
Bob Allen's 'On Lower Lakeland Fells' as a source of walks.

Depending on where you are staying, try the Waterfalls Walk in
Langadale (Skelwith Bridge -> Colwith Force -> Slaters Bridge ->
Elterwater Village -> Skelwith). Two great waterfalls, reasonably
level, two good pubs (3 Shires Inn & Brittania) and Skelwith Tea
    rooms.

If you are on the westerm side, try Muncaster Fell. Take the
Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway from Eskdale Green to the stop before
Ravenglass (I forget it's name, but it's by the Watermill), walk
across to Muncaster Castle, and then follow the Roman Road over
Muncaster Fell back to Eskdale Green.

Another one, although slightly longer (about 8 miles), is Ullswater
Lakeshore. Take the Steamer from Glenridding to Howtown, and walk back
along the shore. Great walk, one to take the day over with a picnic.

There are quite a few of the easy walks at:
    http://www.lakedistrictoutdoors.co.uk/outdooractivities.cfm?id=90
which might suit you. They are listed in areas so you can choose walks
in the area you're staying in.

Short walks aren't yet my style but I did contribute one:
    http://www.lakedistrictoutdoors.co.uk/walkingroutedetails.cfm?routeID=77
which isn't difficult and gives great views, such as:

Walk around grasmere lake or rydal water or from ambleside to grasmere
via the rothay if you do it both ways it becomes the rothay circuit
    about 7 miles.

If you want further pointers may I suggest the guide book Lakeland
walking on the level by Norman Buckley and More lakeland walking on
    the level.
14.90 GBP for both from www.amazon.co.uk

Helvellyn is good, I've done it 4 times but one thing I have learned
is you can get just as good views from the bottom as from the top. one
of my favourite parts of the lake district is the wetlands to the
south of Derwentwater although it's partly flooded at the moment
offers surprisingly good views despite being on the level.

  13. Do not tell anyone but Claife Heights west of Windermere (the lake
itself) is a fine piece of land. If you meet Mr Foulkes do not tell
him you saw the recommendation here. You could park in Bowness and
take the ferry then walk up from Sawrey.
Once you march up the slope you reach a plateau of sorts with
several Tarns containing many trouts which sport themselves of an
afternoon. There is a circuit and one Tarn is just off the beaten
track but most beautiful with a stone boathouse, very nice but rather
    cold to swim in.
You can reach the heights from Hawkshead but the walk up to
Latterbarrow is a leg stretcher, you would park near the friends
meeting house. You walk south from the top of Latterbarrow and through
    the woods to the Tarns.
