Yes. I thought that. The words "health and safety" and "Everest" don't
sit very well together in the same article!

Everest News reports 500 summits and 6 deaths this year. That's actually
fewer deaths than I expected when I looked it up.

I doubt it. While they may be at base camp, and would probably
investigate an accident (at least one involving a UK citizen), I
seriously doubt there is an HSE inspector at the summit handing out red
cards.

I thought Angus approved of HSE taken beyond its logical extreme and
then some? OTOH, maybe he just likes foaming at the mouth, liking to
keep in practice at what he does best.

Yes, my first thoughts on reading about the H&S issue was 'what next?' in
this silly world of ours. If they were trying to prove the Mallory and
Irvine first summit theory, then it should have been all the way in the
period kit. (says me from the comfy PC room at home!)

Maybe there was an H&S inspector carrying out a routine safety check on the
ladder they removed!

don't want to know....Irving's camera, Aliens in Area 51, Paris Hilton and
the exact heights of Munro's and Corbetts ;-)

One of the kids brought a Mountain fact sheet home the other day which
stated, amongst other things, that the world's highest peak, Mt Everest, was
8850.1728m high. So now you know. The wonders of GPS eh?

If you're working to a 1/10th of a mm like that, you better say WHICH
MONTH the height applies to! It's still headed skywards, as far as I
know.
(More likely someone got over-enthusiastic converting from feet and
inches - yep, that's exactly 29,036 feet, 0". Don't they teach anyone
about significant digits these days??).
