1. Would you wear a dust mask or a handkerchief over you mouth and nose on you evening rides to avoid eating gnats and other bugs that fly in your mouth while gasping for air. Or would you just continue to eat them and ride on ?

Yesterday was something to be desired. It seems that every 2 blocks or so and sometimes earlier, I would run into "Huge" swam of gnats. This happen through out the duration of my 12 mile ride. It was annoying as hell. These things flew up my nose, flew in my mouth even though I would try to keep mouth shut and only breath through my teeth.

These gnats also went inside my helmet by the hundreds as well. I was moving too. I could not see my computer but I beat my normal time for this route by 4 minutes.
.
It was almost as if these things were following me. 😠

2. i've never encountered that problem so i have no advice. maybe get a riding partner that's just a little faster than you so he can ride in front and clear the way. 😄

That might help ! At least I would not have to eat as many with him eating some as well. I think I will bring some mustard with me on todays ride. Maybe I will get lucky and get a beetle , something with some meat on it's bones.

I have problems with this, sometimes its sooo bad, that I have to pick bugs out of my teeth, it gets annoying, I'd like some kind of mask

5. You can't tuck your nose in your shirt collar? You're hunched over already!

6. I know exactly how you feel, the gnats are horrible this summer.. I just brace myself and hope I don't inhale too many of em! The mosquitoes are pretty bad too; the route I typically ride goes through a heavily wooded area with a few ponds, I get absolutely swarmed.

7. Saves on energy bars, munch them insect carbs. Yum . 😄
Weed.

Yup, I just chalk it up to being a good source of protein. We occasionally have flying ants around here and they only get halfway down my throat before they are able to grab something and try to climb back out. This sets off a horrible round of coughing and requires a quick drink from the water bottle to get anywhere close to back to normal.

9. On occasion I ride through a swarm of somethings, eat a few, and keep on riding. A swig from my water bottle and I just put it down to some free protein. 🙂

10. If it's dark enough and I have my helmet light on, I can see the swarms before I hit 'em and prepare. I squint my eyes and close my mouth and hope for the best.

The best part, though? Knowing that those swarms are bug orgies.

11. yummm

12. My wife likes me to wear a Margaret Thatcher mask when we're scrogging. I guess I could wear it at dusk.......
