QVC/Hotdogs and PA Dutch/Shoo-fly pie June closeout!

I'll probably drive out for that too. Total Prize money is $10,000. I
won't
be competing but will no doubt come back with a trunk full of stuff!!!

Andy,
Stop at the roadside stands. You get better bargains and MUCH better food
than you do stopping at the commercial centers in Lancaster County. A lot
of times, if you see a really large yard sale/honey/baked goods roadside
sign, it is a church group holding a sale to pay for medical care, as most
of the stricter Dutch do not have health insurance and the church takes over
paying the bill. Some of the best food you could ever hope to put in your
mouth comes from these sales.

There is a bulk provision store in Gordonville. Ask one of the locals how
to get to it. It
is run by the stricter Mennonites for the Amish community. They have gas
jet light fixtures and the 'electronic' cash register and the refridgeration
units are on diesel generators. Watch parking the car out front as the
wagon tie-ups take precedents, and you have to dodge the meadow muffins to
get in the store, but ohhh boy, once you are in there......flour and sugar
from local mills in 50 and 100 lb. increments, spices in plastic tubs, any
and all canning supplies, cookies, crackers, cereals, in LARGE quantity
bags. The people who run it are strict Mennonite, but not adverse to credit
cards, checks and the like. As one old bearded sage once put it, it pays to
be respectful of the neighbors (the Amish). Some of the prices on 'brought
in' stuff can be a bit high, but the local stuff is priced right. Act
respectful, ask intellegent questions, and you will be surrounded by sage
advice and old country wisdom. Wish I was going with you.

Excellent advice to drive past the industrial places and visit the
roadside stands. I was just there last week after visiting some friends
a little further south.
