This respiratory infection I've got - gone from being a code in my node to being a nasty hacking
cough, tight chest & wheeziness (Vernon says I "whistle" when I'm asleep due to the wheeziness ...).
This is driving me up the wall & I'm missing being on the bike - it is driving me crazy. So
collective brains on how to get a prompt recovery please - it is driving me up the wall - but go to
    a doc with a cough & cold &, well - 'nuff sed.

Full of withdrawal symptoms about not being on the bike...

Yes, sorry to hear you're not well.

You've got that, that's not a problem. And having had an enforced layoff just before Christmas
    myself, I really can sympathise...

... but as Pete suggests, this Pete concurs: rest is probably best, it'll let your body concentrate
resources on fighting the bugs rather than have effort sidelined into propelling a bike. A wee
pootle for a mile or two probably won't kill you, but I'm afraid any Big Rides will probably be
    counter-productive when it comes to de-lurgifying :-(

This was on Breakfast news this am. They wheeled Dr Rosemay Leonard on to say that viral colds can
leave a hacking cough for up to a month after most symptoms have disappeared, and as long as the
sputum was relatively uncovered i.e. no blood, (I didn't really fancy finishing my toast and marmite
after this) there was no reason to worry. Mild expectorants e.g. Benylin, Robotussin, Tixylix,
Valponia may be of some benefit.

Get well soon, and might I suggest some of one of Scotland's finest malts as a good way to, if not
recover, at least enjoy yourself as much as possible.

    Sympathy.

A few years back I had a cough that would not go away. Eventually I took it to the quack -- I try
not to waste his time with trivial but this would not budge.

He suggested I had had a virus (yep) and somehow the standard cough had just 'forgotten' to go away.

He prescribed the brown inhaler to help remove the problem -- it worked after a week or so.

On the radio/tv this morning (can't remember which) there was something about coughs being a 'big
    problem' at the moment.

The suggestion was if you were coughing up not a lot or clear stuff -- suffer, it should clear up in
a month or so. If you are coughing up gloopy yellow/green stuff, have some pain or tightness (i.e.
what you described) -- go see the quack.

    Sounds reasonable.

Wahaay. The PSF is out of action. Let the bibshort-fest begin!

Levity aside unless there is something untoward, the only real cure for colds and coughs is time.
For the cough the Swiss use Ricola sweets which I've found work very well. For tightness and
wheeziness try some karvol in a bowl of hot water and a towel over your head. Family will laugh and
make all sorts of gestures you can't see through the towel but the results are worth it.

As for the bike, get Vernon to captain a tandem, wrap up warm and sit on the back with your feet
    on the bars.

Now where are those leopard print bib shorts I bought the other day.......

Not a good sign. See the doc - it won't be a waste of her time. You could be heading for a chest
infection. Actually, if you are wheezing in your sleep you probably already have one (or asthma, in
which case you should also see the doc).

It doesn't stop me, but I'm asthmatic. If I am heading for a chest infection I will get a bottle of
the usual antibiotic and get out in the fresh air as much as possible.

Doctors like to see people. They are sociable types. Pop in to your surgery and have a nice moan
about your symptoms, and make it plain that you understand why antibiotics are not a good
    alternative to Smarties :-)

Always good advice that. Although at this risk of getting a howling mob outside my house I have to
say that the Bushmills 16 year old slips down very nicely as well. Personal favorite at the moment
though is a 15 year old Glendronach. The fact that the Glendronach distillery is only a pleasant 12
mile ride from my house doesn't hurt of course.

    Cheers,

  14. If it's viral (which it most probably is) then it's you, the virus and your immune system...and it's
all hands to the pump....rest, rest, rest and more rest - with plenty of fluid and soup thrown in
    for good measure.

Not wishing to depress you further, I had a virus a few years back that had me laid up for months.
Very nasty....could barely hear for weeks! Fearing I was making a dodgy self-diagnosis (that being:
there's nothing I can do about this), I paid a visit to the doc....we did a few
antibiotics...several in fact .....complete waste of time. It cleared...eventually...but boy, was I
    knocked up.

No harm in getting to the doc, at least it will eliminate a few things.

Times like this you realize what daytime TV is for !

    Keep warm too.

Some infections really need anti-biotics to sort them out. A few years ago I had a nasty cough that
lingered for two or three weeks. I finally got to going to the doc, and it turned out it was
pneumonia. A few days of anti-biotics and it was gone.
