My closest neighbor is about 1000 feet away. Most times when they
cook outside it's just for the two of them. I've yet to have noticed
any cooking smells wafting all the way over here. But on the few
occasions that they have a large gathering they always invite me, but
there's still no cooking smells coming over here, it's just the
neighborly thing to do. We help each other all the time, I have the
best neighbors.

Our nearest neighbors are a tad further away than that - but, sometimes,
if the wind is blowing in the right direction, I can smell whatever they
are grilling (and it always smells great) 😉

Smoke does carry and people don't like it in their windows.

A friend told me a story from her college days when fires were still
allowed on Ocean Beach... she said they had a very small fire going
and it was the only one on the beach that night. Police officers
approached and politely asked them to put out the fire. When asked
why, they pointed to a hill (small mountain) at least a mile or more
away and said the neighbors complained. We have a strong wind off the
beach which carries smoke into the neighborhoods. Neighbors have
managed to close all areas except one to fires now. They are trying
to shut down that one too, but the general public is in an uproar
about it, so I'm hoping that won't happen. Some things are tradition.
Bonfires on the beach is one of them.

I LOVE the smell of grilling, any time of day or night. :-)

Fireplace smoke in the winter months is rather pleasant too especially
when people are burning cedar.

Burning garbage and smoldering leaves however, are not.
The only time I ever called on renting neighbors was when they were
attempting to burn 3 piles of leaves that did nothing but smolder in
their back yard so badly that the smoke was thick in my entire yard and
it stank to high heaven. And they were not monitoring the burn. They
did not get fined, they just made them put it out. I called the fire
Marshall, not the city. Those people are generally a little nicer.

Burning stuff like that in town is not legal anyway.

I put leaf pruning and weed rakings into construction grade bags and
compost it. Not burn it! It can also be bagged and put in the dumpster
or on the curb and you can call the city for bulk pickup. I don't
generally rake leaves anyway. They rot down quickly and make excellent
lawn mulch.

The smoke was so thick, I could not breathe in my own yard. The light
breeze was blowing in my direction.
That's not the same as grilling. Not at all!

I love beach Bonfires. :-) Some of my fondest memories with my uncle and
cousins in Encinetas is of beach bonfires!

Bonfires are verboten here on the gulf coast, unless they are in a
removable container.

The guy across the street from me is a competetor in the Memphis in
May BBQ contest every year. He practices from time to time during the
year. =) I absolutely love it when he grills, especially when he
shares samples with us. <g>

My only complaint when people grill late in the evening is the noise.
(You know, the laughing, hooting, hollering, drunken singing, etc.)

My only problem with aromas are sweet perfumes, which gag me.

The only smoking my ancient neighbor to the east does is supplied by
Phillip Morris. Thank God, she's rarely ever on her deck, as here in
SoCal, my deck slider is often open to let in the fresh ocean breezes.
OTOH, she's also a lush and my biggest worry is she's going to burn
down her house and take mine with it.

Me too, except when it's at my house. (Which it usually is! They're usually
