Cycling to work at 1-30 pm for yesterday's afternoon shift I had one of those "Doh" moments when I looked down and realised I had no lights on the bike. As luck would have it I was passing a bike shop at the time, so popped in. Apparently, it was a bad time of the year to ask for lights and the owner was waiting for the 08 stock to come in.
He also wasn't a Cateye dealer so had nothing which would fit my rear bracket. I told him I would take anything he had, so for just a tenner he sold me a lightset, the rear light was OK as it fitted my seatpost, but the front was a real pig. They are not designed for oversized drops like the Deda bars I use and the only place it would fit was right in the corner which fouled the Campag button shifter. The rubber strap that comes with the Cateye EL400 is much better. You can even fix it in bizarre positions such as this. http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/images/products/Lights/inoandel400.jpg

My new lights arrived this morning. I treated myself to a couple of Cateye HL-EL530 lights. Normal price £45 each, but a sniff over £60 for a pair of them from Cycle Express. Ordered last week and they arrived this monring. Gosh, they are bright, with a definite beam even in daylight.

The 530 is definitely bright, however I had issues with mine turning itself on whilst stuffed in a pannier (the switch is too easily moved I guess?). I ended up switching back to the EL300 I had knocking about. -- These opinions might not even be mine ... Let alone connected with my employer ...

mind you suprisng how good even the cheapies are, when i was storing stuff out nr my folks place i rode down to say hi as you do and on the way back went though the old tunnel wasn't too bad really.

one on my old mountain bike cum road now, sometimes comes on all by it's self, virbration i would guess though it hasn't turned it's self off, but i do sometimes pull up and find it flashing away in the bright sun.

Out of curiosity, since you say you ordered a pair, are these for Mr. Norbert Frosty? Do you have one on each side of the steering bar? Perhaps I'll try a similar configuration for the Scorpion. I've seen some EL530s on sale on Ebay, other side of the pond but with the dollar so low still probably cheaper than a local purchase.
