Well, the XT are 135mm spacing and the ultegra is 130mm..potential problem. Both are sealed very
similarly, with 'labyrinth' seals. Both would be fine, IMO, if adjusted and greased well and often.

Take a look at the hubs themselves.
XT has additional seals to help shed water, mud, etc.
The rear can be respaced to fit your frame.
Measure your OLD. Some Cross Frames come with 132.5 mm spacing betweeen the dropouts. If yours are at 132.5mm, they were built with 130 or 135 mm in mind.
You would gain some addtional wheel durability if you kept them at 135 mm OLD. You can also get some addtional durability if you use a rear rim with Offset Spoke Bed such as Ritchey Trekker or Bontrager Fairlane.
I agree with Peter about adding grease and cleaning and repacking in severe environment usage intervals.

not sure if that's how my LBS did it but i've been running a respaced to 130mm XT hub on my touring
bike for the last 15,000 miles.

You lost me here. I measured the inside space between the rearfork dropouts. This was
exactly 130 mm's.

I would use a CXP 33 rim. Bontrager and Ritchey are not available here.

Hi Derk,

I have a Dura Ace front hub on my mountain bike (rigid fork) and after three seasons of what most
would consider fairly hardcore trail riding it seems to be just about as durable as any off-road hub
I've used.

I bought a pair of XTR hubs that the previous owner had re-spaced to 132.5. They're on my
cross bike.

They seem to work fine. I'd have your LBS re-space your hubs to either 130mm or 132.5 and ride the
heck out of them!
