GPS handlebar mounts

I can't really suggest making one. I've tried it, and it worked for me, but
mounting and dismounting the device was a PITA. (mainly because some gaffa
tape was involved in the construction...)

RAM mounts are one that come to mind.

more choice as to the bits and attachments.

They're not cheap, but they're quite decent. I can't recommend them enough.
I've had an oldish (and by today's standards heavy) PDA on a motorcycle
while slamming into the rear of some P plater [censored] who wasn't watching where
she was going... but anyway... After I woke up in hospital several hours
later, I found my PDA in my bum bag. No idea how it got there, but it gave me
the idea of time and place of where "it" happened.
It gave me a bit of sanity where everyone else in hospital had no idea.

Yeah, the home-made mounts won't do this. (not anything that I've made anyway).

The RAM mounts come in several parts, and you have to order them as such.
Firstly there's the mount itself, it could be a suction cap, a handlebar mount
whatever... There is the device mount, there are many custom made mounts for
specific devices, for everything else, there are "universal" mounts. There
are 1" rubber balls on rear of each of these mounts.
And there is the centre bit, which is just a finger operated screw
tightener that fastens the two balls in any angle.

Well, the mount itself is just plastic, stainless and rubber, so no harm
done there with water. However, weather proofing your device is up to you.

The car mounting kit is pretty secure on the windshield, but I wouldn't
trust it to hold the phone over rough roads on a bike.

Some sort of water-proofing would be even cooler ;-)

Topeak makes a phone bracket to mount on your bars - check with your LBS...

I found a fairly robust generic mobile phone holder ("with press-down
clamps"😉 for $4 at BigW a few years ago, cable-tied it to the headstem
with a bit of high density foam inbetween, and it's held my eTrex in
perfectly all that time..
