  1. Hello. I'm wondering if anyone else suffers from Plantar Faceitous (sp?). i was recently diagnosed
with it and have received orthotics to alleviate the problem. i have yet to run on them because i
am giving myself some time off, but i'm wondering if the pain ever goes away. also what are the
best shoes to run in with the orthotics? and should i place the orthotic above or below the insole?
    thank you.

  2. There is much information regarding Plantar Fasciitis on the Internet, do a search on Google. I
don't usually read this newsgroup but I would imagine that there have been many posts regarding the
    condition on this newsgroup.

Your research will show the medical field stresses conservative approaches before they will
    consider surgery.

If your condition is something that is not long standing it may respond to conservative approaches.

If it will fit, the orthotic in my opinion feels best worn under the insole.

I went 10 years before I saw a doctor and after more than a year of conservative approaches I had
surgery and after an 8-week recovery period I was fine. That was five years ago and I have had no
    problems since.

I'd suggest you stuff them all your shoes to help your PF heal. You will likely delay or stifle the
healing without wearing the orthotics as much as possible.

A stability or motion control but not a soft cushioned shoe else you negate the effects of
    the orthotic.

The insoles they put in shoes in general are useless junk. At best they keep you socks from
rubbing on the stitches inside the shoe. Remove them, if nothing else the orthotic will ride on
    the flat surface.

Isn't the doctor answering these questions?

  4. Many of us have the problem. It seems to be different for each of us. Many have been able to shake
it totally, I am still working on that.

Best shoes are supposed to be stability shoes. You may need to go up half a size, depending on how
bulky your orthotics are. Remember to take the orthotics to the shop when you try out the shoes! The
orthotic should be above the insole (I often remove the insole anyway.)

Joe's pretty good at shaking his out totally, his wife left him for that very reason.

Definitely - I have been wearing orthotics in all of my shoes (apart from sandals!) for about 5-6
years now. You'll notice the difference, and it becomes habit to transfer them to the shoes you are
going to be wearing that day.

Humm... have to disagree with you there Doug. A decent orthotic will have some give in the arch to
simulate the flattening, and thus shock absorbing nature of the arch in a normal gait runner. In a
motion control shoe, the motion control block is going to pretty much follow the contour of the
orthotic, not support it. At best, you fork out money unnecessarily for a motion control shoe, at
worst, the combined stiffness of the orthotic, plus the control block is going to cause you
problems. I would think that a stability / cushioned shoe is the best - anything that allows the
orthotic to do its work whilst still providing the cushioning to aid recovery / prevent reoccurence.
However, that said, the best way to buy a shoe is to test out a bunch at the shop. Vtbrink - find a
shop that'll let you either run on their treadmill, or run outside for a while. Choose which ever
    feels the best.

I see where you're coming from, but wearing cushioned shoes myself, I just bung it in on-top of the
insole, which is pretty flat anyway.

  8. Hello,

I had PF bad in both feet about 10 years ago and tried to get rid of it by lowering my training but
it didn't work. I finally completely stopped running for 6 months and it totally went away.

I know that rest for months works but I don't know about other methods that may work while you
continue to train. Anyway, the good news is that it will eventually go away with rest ..... at least
    it did for me.

I've run several years since then with no hint of a reccurance. When it happened to me I was
increasing my mileage and intensity of training much too fast. Since then I've been very careful not
to do too much too quickly. So far I haven't screwed up like that again.

    Good luck!!

  11. very good advice! it's just so difficult and frustrating to NOT run .. but i know that rest
sometimes is the only remedy. thank you. it's nice to know that the pain will go away for good.
