Cyclist Killed

It is sad to hear of this incident. My condolences to Jim and his family members.

Any details as to what happened other than the newsreport?

weather, light conditions, flying a flag, flashing lights, intersection, etc.). Knowing the cause
and/or contributing factors could help us be more aware and possibly take some corrective action.

I agree that it is helpful to know the circumstsnces relating to the incident. At this time, the
facts are not cohesive as he was riding alone, on his way to the start of a ride, at 7:30 AM, in
clearconditions and in a very busy area. What is absolute is that he was hit from behind by a
landscape truck and killed instantly. To my best knowledge the driver of the truck was not charged.
When more info is available I will post so that this kind of tragedey may somehow be avoided. Jim S.

corrective action would be to have police be more zealous in charging divers that hit a cyclist from
behind at 720am, drivers should be held accountable for their actions,drivers can slow down quite
eaily , driving to fast comes to mind, but it seems florida is the the kill bicyclist state..
horrible , its a tragedy that like drung driving is tortally avoidable. if the law enforcement take
it seroious sorry for your loss

I thought I had seen a picture of Mr. Webb at the Reynold's Weld Lab website and yep, there he is.
Pictures (Page 2) I was curious as to just how low his bike was (As I'm flirting with a possible Low
Racer to add with my Aero) and I'm SURPRISED that his Wishbone was NOT as LOW, as I had thought. He
should have CLEARLY been able to have been seen. NOW, I may start having some added thoughts before
maybe moving with a LR, as I'm a tad further down the Fl. coast (Ft. Lauderdale Area) and vehicle
traffic vs. bicyclists here, is JUST as BAD. My prayers and thoughts go out to Mr. Webb's Family. EZ

Again... its not because they can't see you. Its because they don't look. That type of accident is a
classic alas and often seen with uprights too. 10-20 or so each year here and many are fatal.

I suppose the bus with "Bush Go Home" [1] painted on the front was repainted or retired a long time
ago. The buses at that time were a sort of yellow-tan color, IIRC.

In reading the article I see what might have been the primary factor:

"Webb was peddling a reclining bicycle eastbound"

My guess is that the truck driver was blinded by the rising sun and never saw Dr. Webb.

I have a favorite route on one of my centurys that comes home directly into the setting sun. If I am running late I pull over about 30 min before sunset and wait until the sun sets before continuing.

Cars crash into other cars, trucks,motorcycles, pedestrians, trees and even into buildings and large
bodies of water. Does the size of your bike or the color of your seat make you any less of a target?

from my 15 plus years of riding a recumbent, no matter how low, they are more noticeable than any
other upright bike. I'd be more worried about somebody on a cell phone, drifting over hitting me
than not being seen. Plus, sorry here, but florida drivers a joke for the most part, many elderly,
and many who look like they should never have been given a vehicle in the first place. Those
landscape trucks are everywhere!

The driver was 78 years old, wasn't he? He could have been blinded by the steering wheel.
