Anyway - the point is that cars emit much more pollutants and irritants than busses per passenger mile. But everybody is afraid to ride busses (or commuter trains/light-rail) because they're too lazy to get out of their cars.

Stamping foot,
Steve is a police academy trainer locally. It came from a long philosophical discussion I was having with him on tx.guns. He's really fun to talk to. ;-)
And yes, I got his permission to use that statement as a sig!
Oddly enough, the conversation started out discussing the right and wrong about killing whales... then went from there.

Maybe you aren't a gas-hog (you use more than I do, I'm sure), but most people who try and argue that they need their cars for all the things they do usually turn up flat on logic and bloated on gas usage and dependency. Your argument is not unlike any other that has gone that route - especially when you start trying to argue points you haven't even considered more than a split-second.
Anyway - the point is that cars emit much more pollutants and irritants than busses per passenger mile.
Actually, the point - before everyone wanted to sidetrack it - was that people are so quick to complain about cigarette smoke which is miniscule compared to their firing up their car and burning a couple/few gallons of gas every day - most of which can be avoided.
Gas should be $5-10/gallon like it is in other parts of the world. It'd sure help pay for the current war on gas.

BTW, a good book to read regarding the diesel bus thing is Internal Combustion by Edwin Black. Lets put the blame where it belongs, General Motors, Standard Oil (Now Exxon-Mobil), and Firestone.

That would be low sulfur diesel fuel. It still stinks and the particulates are still a problem.

Actually those aren't the reasons I've heard. They'd rather not ride with what they see as the rabble.
I use public transit. Why? Because I'm a frugal [censored]. Once gas went over $2 a gallon I knew the gig was up and a pass is only $45 a month.
Not to mention that RIPTA has now implemented a very hackable e-fare system.

About 2 years. (File modification date for the photos is Jan. 5th 2005). All I know is that when a bus stopped next to me, I had to run away from it and gag as I could not breathe!

If I had a reliable, timed bus line to New Braunfels to take me to work, I'd use it. ;-) Energy costs in general are eating me alive!
I do see your point, totally. I look forward to the light rail going in. The only drawback is that it'd limit groceries I brought home to what I could carry in a back pack instead of the back of my truck. <g> I also wonder what they'd think if I were to visit Saxet and board the train with a hard or soft sided gun case...
Oh, light rail. I'd love to see that here but the damned politicians can't see past the next bribe here.

The problem is there isn't enough mass transit in the U.S. to take up the slack. Europe has lots of rail, both narrow gauge and light. Even Volkswagen uses light rail to move parts between factories that are a few miles apart.
Most busses nowdays emit only slightly more [censored] as a single SUV.
I want facts! "Most" bussess. Well, that's a weasel-ly way of getting out of proving anything;-)
I would want to see something to back that up too. I worked in commercial vehicle enforcement for 18 years and spent a lot of time inspecting buses. They burn a lot of fuel and emit a lot of [censored] into the air.

What about the amount of time they sit idly waiting with a/c on to catch up to schedule.
Almost all buses are diesel powered these days, and diesel engines use very little fuel when idling. But the exhaust still stinks.
I hadn't ever seen this setup until earlier this year. Oh yes all of these trailers have OCR on the side with no other markings.
Joe Cilinceon
Markings are less obvious now. I learned that in my Advanced Disaster Life Support class. After 9-11, the Dept. of Transportation realized that markings describing exactly which hazardous material was carried within was probably not a good idea if you didn't want terrorists to also be able to use that information for mischief.

I did have a longer response to this buy my machine flaked out. Let me just quote this article. There's plenty more out there:
Note that I am speaking mostly of public transit, not school busses - which are of course the worst out there. Greyhound is next, but a half full greyhound is still better than 20 individual cars (they are cleaner than school busses).
ObFood: I'm on a liquid diet. I need a foie gras milkshake (no, I'm not a militant liberal).

Sounds cool, but I see LOTS of shipping containers on trains around here. I've never seen them with wheels on them? -- Peace, Om
I will try to get a picture of one as they go by if at all possible. I was really impressed with the simple design of them. Basically what I see is if you look at a standard semi trailer the front set of train wheels fit to the trailer the same why the semi does. Now the rear end of the trailer has a plate added that supports the rear wheels which are a bit higher than the front set. I figure the reason for this is for better air flow over it and to raise the rear tires on the trailer to a safe distance above the rails. It is really a net engineering setup.

I'm thinking this is nothing more than trucking companies logo.

Light rail is great for long commutes but not for replacing short local bus service, IMO. AT least not the way I've seen it implemented (like in San Jose).
Actually those aren't the reasons I've heard. They'd rather not ride with what they see as the rabble.
Yep. That is a big problem on some routes. Incidents are pretty rare especially at commute times. Many professionals ride the busses and light rail and many operators will enforce a respectable ride. But many won't.

Austin it's an unprecedented $10/month. Mine's $2.50/year since I'm disabled.
