  1. With 2:04:26 time, Gebrselassie broke Tergat's record by 29 seconds.

Yep, I think Lance called it. Geb is the greatest of all time in my
    opinion.

By a good 29 seconds too. This guy is incredible. If you go to
letsrun.com, on the front page all you see is "2:04:26!!!" in big bold
    blinking letters. Cool.

On another note, Paula Radcliffe finished second at the Great North Run
in the UK today - her first race post-pregnancy. Kara Goucher won the
race, on her half-marathon debut, with the fastest time in the world
    this year.

Now Lance will call it again, TAINTED! This is NONSENSE!

I love this guy - he's the most personable & engaging pro athlete I've
ever met - just a fun guy. Now having said that, when I read in a
paper ".....he maintained that margin through the half-marathon
point, clocking 62.29 to Tergat's 63.01, and at 30km when the last two
    of his five pacesetters retired".

A squad of pacesetters up to and through the 30K point in a 42K race?
    WTF?

Elite Pro Men don't get a fleet of pacesetters through to the 30K mark
@ Chicago or NYC, what's going on here? 19 Miles of enjoying the
benefit of pace setters? I love Halie - but this is BS.

Why? It's a staged and rigged playing field to advance & insure an
outcome for a preferred entry. The deck is stacked. The event is
manipulated to the extreme to produce and outcome, and they got it.
You cannot have this "rigging" in the Olympics for example. How the
Berlin RD rigged the event would not fly with the IOC or IAAF.

I feel the same way about Bannister sub 4:00. It was not a individual
accomplishment, it was a "team" accomplishment - just as the "team"
strategies that benefit cyclist in their racing. BTW, yesterday I
watched Alan Webb clock a 3:52.7 1 mile in a local road race here - it
looked pretty incredible, that guy has gotten more muscular and ripped
in his upper body in the last year too.

Alan did not benefit from a team of pace setters like Roger Bannister
did - it was an individual achievement.

In sprinting, if there is too much wind aiding the runner - the World
Record does not count - there is a line, a limit of how much wind a
runner is allowed to benefit from. It has to be said, 30K of pace
setters? in a 42K race? Is that not ridiculous? If you think not,
then why not have pace setters through the 40K mark? How about the
    entire race?

What's the value of a pace setter for a world class pro? If it's 1
second per 1K for example Halie DOES NOT break the record. There's
clearly some value and benefit, care to quantify it? That's what I
hate about this, I love the guy, but hate how the stacked the deck.
How and why even reference 2:04:26 at other events like the
Olympics? When the top runners would get pace setters for 30K of the
race. And they won't get them at NYC, or Boston, or Chicago, see the
    problem?

An asterisk needs to be on this record. I don't know if Tergat got a
team of pacesetters through the 30K mark, and going forward, if for
example someone runs 2:04:40 in Chicago next week, unassisted by
pacesetters for any distance - well that's more impressive than Haile
    and his 2:04:26.

I just want a clean, legit outcome. If he had competitors pushing him
to the WR, great - but this artificial rigging to produce and outcome
is just not the same as a runner in competition. When you run with
pace setters - you never have to consider or contemplate competitive
strategy for example...and runners are always playing mind games with
each other and taking them in and out of their game / race - that's
void with pace setters, etc. Okay, I've had my say.

If what you're saying is correct, he increased his pace after the
pacesetters dropped out. Here are his splits:

    5 km: 00:14:44
    10 km: 00:29:27 / 00:14:43
    15 km: 00:44:16 / 00:14:50
    20 km: 00:59:10 / 00:14:54
    25 km: 01:14:05 / 00:14:55
    30 km: 01:28:56 / 00:14:51
    35 km: 01:43:38 / 00:14:43
    40 km: 01:58:08 / 00:14:30

Like Paul Tergat, the previous world record holder? I'm sure he
"benefited" (although I doubt he felt that way at the time) by the
fact that Sammy Korir was right on his ass for the last few miles.

They may not get pace setters, but they get each other. Ryan Hall didn't
as far as I know, have pacesetters when he ran his 2:08:48 (?), but he
was surrounded by other top runners and that probably helped him. Should
we require that every run be a solo run? Blindfold the runners, perhaps?

Oh, non-elite athletes get pacesetters as well. I ran the SF Marathon a
few months ago and there were pacesetters for 3:00, 3:10, 3:20, 3:30, 3:40,
    3:50, 4:00, 4:15, 4:30, 4:45, 5:00, 5:15, and 5:30. The elites didn't
    get [censored].

And it didn't occur to you to check? FYI, Khalid Khannouchi had pace
setters when he set his world records too.

It's a little late for you to be arguing about this -- this more or less
became a settled discussion when Bannister broke 4 minutes. Most world
records have used pace makers for some time.

You will *never* see a world record in an olympic or world championship race,
because everyone is watching each other, gunning for the win. No rabbits.
All the track records these days are set in meets like the fast, rabbited
golden league circuit held across in Europe.

It's great that he won, but that is not a very fast time for him.

All the fast times these days are run with rabbits. You're welcome to have a
different opinion about this, and you wouldn't be alone (there are others who
aren't into rabbited races), but as far as the world of athletics is concerned,
this is largely a settled argument that your side lost before you were born.
    Sorry.

Paul Tergat more or less had that since his pace setter raced him to the
    finish line !

The only reason they don't do that, is that any pace setter who could run
the first 40 probably wants to take their own shot at the record.

Day-um, it's like you can pretend to be ANYONE!

With superpowers like that, one day you might... you might... well, I
guess about all you can aspire to do with that is maybe mildly annoy a
few of the adults. But hey, that's something! You'll have *made a
