Spoke to VicRoads again today and the situation is thus: It appears that
there was a disconnect between the planning and construction stage of
the rumble strips at the Avenel/Nagambie rd. rail crossing; in other
words a stuffup, and the gap should have been on the left side. A
stuffup was the least worst possibility and I am satisfied to believe it.
VicRoads will leave a 400mm gap on the left verge of all the future rail
rumble strips for bike passage and I am also satisfied with that. The
reason for the left side and not the middle is that for a bike to move
right to go through the middle, possibly in front of a B-Double doing
100kph, is just too dangerous. Being in the middle of the lane may be an
option in the slower city traffic, but is a recipe for death in the
country. Any crossings treatments such as that on the Avenel/Nagambie
rd. will have another 400mm of pavement added to the left side of the
rumble strips as it will do too much damage to the existing pavement to
re-engineer it. Signs will be erected prior to the rumble strips to warn
road users.
When the job is fixed I will post photos of the repaired rumble strips
and the signs.
Many thanks for those who got involved in this issue as I think VicRoads
got the message from other quarters as well.
