    lunacy.

This incident/post was over 3 years old, and it never fails to
bring out the best of the worst.

Take a bow... err... curtsey, Greer(*).

(*) Greer is the feminine name for Gregory. Very appropriate.

I know that is bad but it sure is funny. I think you should also complain to
the manager at another time, after you had made your get-away.

Last time I posted this the local food group, it turned into a
big flame war and somebody forwarded the story to the store and
accused me of shoplifting. Their response seemed to agree that
is was shoplifting as well, and that person posted their response
in Usenet, calling me a shoplifter.

I had a discussion with the store manager (who wrote that email).
The lady manager actually seemed to think it *was* shoplifting.
She obviously wasn't very bright - or customer oriented. I
offered to call the cops for her if she promised to press
charged, where I would have countered for slander. She gave me a
gift certificate just so I'd go away.

It could simply be that she got transffered to another location. That
happened with me long time ago, when I was a baby, i.e I was new in my
eralky 20s and new to the country. It's wasn't a grocery store but I
was cashier at a store. This woman, must be in her 50s, was mad about
something I had no idea of. It was my first job in my life and I was
doing it only for fun, nto because I needed the money. I just ignored
the way she was acting and then came the next lady (also must be in
her 50s) . I did the usual thing, i.e. friendly but the two women - I
don't know hether they wer together or not - decided to write a note
to the manager, leaving it with the other girl. I didn't care. I knew
that I was too good a wokrer and the manager wouldn't care such
thing. The girl leave earlier than me but a few minutes later, she
came back, and took that note. I don't know whether she gave it to he
manager later or just decided noit to give. Tje next day, I decided to
move to a place at the other side of town. A week later, I was
transferred. The manager never said anything to me. The customers were
    the bully.

    I've done that before:

I went to Central Market one day, looking for nothing in
particular when I spotted a tri-tip sitting in the meat case, all
alone and looking for something to do. So I stuck around trying
to get the attention of somebody back there cutting meat. They
saw me, but couldn't be bothered to break themselves away from
    labeling their hamburger packages.

I waited about 2 minutes for help when some young Hawaiian lady,
a definite 10+, steps up beside me. Suddenly Studly Dooright
back there playing with his hamburger decides to help a customer
and steps up tho the counter - "Can I help you maam"?

    Huh?

Before I could protest that I was here first, she's already
pointing to *my* tri-tip, while glancing over at me - knowing I
was there well before her. I usually speak up when it's clear
that I'm was the next person to be serviced, but it all happened
too quick. Now what? I wanted the same piece of meat and if I
speak up now and say I was first *and* I wanted that same piece
of meat, then it'll look like I'm doing it out of spite.

I left the counter without ordering anything, but not before
directing a loud grunt, shaking head, and evil stare at the
    [censored]-eating grin on Studly Dooright.

Later, Mrs. America catches up to me in the bulk food section. I
suddenly got that urge for that tri-tip again. While her back is
turned to her cart checking out the nuts, I snagged the tri-tip
out her cart. A minor victory. From the looks of her cart it
didn't look like she could do that tri-tip justice anyway.

I wish I would have left a note in her cart telling her why she
didn't have a tri-tip any more. Hopefully that was supposed to
    be her dinner that night.

Many years ago I decided to impress my now husband by cooking a ham studded
with pineapple. Trouble was, I had no clue how to pick out a good ham. I
saw a man agonizing over two of them, seemingly unable to make up his mind.
Then he put them down in the meat case for a minute while he checked his
wallet. When his back was turned, I snatched up one of the hams, realizing
that it must be a good one if he were going to buy it.

I didn't realize it at the time, but it was enough ham for at least 20
people. I hate ham and it turns out my husband doesn't like it either.
Damned thing was so heavy, I threw my back out trying to get it out of the
    oven.

I'll never forget the look on the guy's face as he turned to pick up that
    ham and it wasn't there.

Funny story about 14 years ago. I was working downtown and the SO met me
for lunch one day. We went to the local food court at the Arcade and
    couldn't decide on anything.

We ended up at the McDonalds there. We're just about to order when this

when we got there we were first in line and there was no one else

I start telling her that we were in line first. My SO is a classic ball

Her boyfriend was getting into it now and my SO looked at him and said

Beats almost making a thief of yourself (stores have video cameras you know)
and it certainly would have showed some maturity. Making somebody else the
victim of one's own failings is a pretty bad reflection on their character.
That woman had no idea she was taking "your" roast and besides they probably
had a dozen more in the back. Sure beats standing around like a kid with
his thumb up his butt waiting for somebody to notice him. Grow a pair dude,
speak up for yourself - mommy isn't going to anymore.

And if he can't do that maybe he should go in drag?

    Paul

It isn't thievery if the store was paid for it anyhow. They don't care
who buys it so long as they get the money for the item.

rolling-on-the-floor fight... While they are busy battling it out, a

As for it being considered "shoplifting" - pffffft! You paid for it before
    you left the store, FFS!

So what did this woman do wrong other than being a babe without somebody
else's permission? She goes into a store to buy a tri-tip roast, where she
encounters a mercurial individual hovering around the display and breathing
like a Brahma bull and for no apparent reason she can surmise. So she
completes her pre-arranged business and leaves only to have her purchase
stolen from her albeight before she could pay for it. Just what exactly is
this woman guilty of? Bad manners? For that reason some cosmic justice
prevails and somebody is permitted to commit an injury against her? I don't
think so. A wrong has been committed against an innocent party who
committed no wrong other than *perhaps* one of an informal and subjective
social nature to which there are no prescribed remedies. There was a time
when "ladies first" was considered the social law of the land. If Wertz had
been caught he could have been hauled away and probably charged with being a
private nuisance (failing to discharge a legal duty - a crime) or crminal
conversion* (a crime.) He very likely could have fallen into the territory
of assault as a rational person could reasonably interpret the theft from a
shopping cart as an impled threat. Also, if the prosecutor really didn't
like Wertz he could go after theft charges as he was taking from this woman
an item she had contracted to purchase - a legal commitment. The roast was
legally on her person and just because she had not yet paid for it does not
mean its removal was not theft. What if he had stolen soething else she had
not at any time exchanged money for? Would that not be theft? No.
*Criminal conversion, in criminal law, is usually defined as the crime of
exerting unauthorised use or control of someone else's property. It differs
from theft in that it does not include the element of intending to deprive
the owner of the possession of that property. As such, it is a lesser
included offense of the crime of theft.

An example might be tapping someone's wireless LAN or public utility line
(which could also amount to theft of services). Another example might be
taking a "joy ride" in a car, never intending to keep it from the owner.
Some places have defined such conduct as a specific type of theft, perhaps
    with a modified penalty.

Note that the "unauthorized" use may begin after a period of authorized use,
where, for example, a person rents a car then keeps it for an extra week
without permission from the rental company. Another common example occurs
when a person fails to report finding lost goods (including animals),
intending only to keep them until someone asks for their return. When the
intent becomes one of keeping them, it's a theft.

The young woman is touched by his friendliness and kindness. She thinks
about life in the big city, so far from her home in the bucolic splendor
    of
her Island state. "Maybe everyone in Texas isn't a jerk" she thinks to
    herself.

When he returns with a fine, fresh tri-tip roast she thanks him as he
    deftly
wraps it for her, smiling at her loveliness. He says it is no trouble,
    and
with a toe-in-the sand smile and a twinkle in his eye he asks if it isn't

She accepts thinking this is a good day, a weird day, but a good day. A

They meet for coffee, sparks fly, they fall madly in love. The last

had heard of them, they were happily living together as a married couple
