Is that my lens hood in the corners of this wide angle shot? Surely
    something's wrong.

Looks to me like one of those shallow rectangular plastic lens hoods,
knocked out of kilter presumably for just one shot. I've done that.

ah yes looking again that does make sence, do people find the hoods
useful? i've never bothered, normally either shielding with one hand on
the odd time that flare and such becomes a problem.

It's probably a petal- type hood (as that is the type the Olympus 14-42mm
that comes as standard with the E-410 has).

Fair enough, but why don't they just wheel(ie, push) the bikes past
    the van?

It must be all of four or five yards, and pushing (rather than riding)
would avoid all risk of a FPN.

Ah, so - I didn't know they were called that. (And I could never see
the point of that shape myself, though I daresay there's a reason for
    it.)

    Well....

If you look one, of the ones at the back is getting off their bike and
the others are all off their bikes so it looks as if they are going to
be pushing to me. The one actually on the pavement could be pushing or
riding, it's hard to tell since you can't see the pedals, but my guess
is pushing as I don't think you would get that close to the bars if
    you were scooting.

Then on another point, it looks to me like a temporary road closure
has beeen affected by the construction workers and it wasn't designed
to alow cyclists through. If it was there should be another yellow
    line.

Looks to me like they have very thoughtfully left a gap for cyclists which
has been very unthoughtfully blocked by the the parked van..

They probably have an e-mail link on their web site. It would be of
greater use to actually post this picture to them. Show them the
effects of a bit of thoughtlessness on the part of their drivers.

That's how it looks to me, though I am also conscious of the
possibility that the concrete blocks were meant to close the whole
width of the carriageway but not enough were delivered...

Start with a lens hood that is narow enough to cause vignetting all
round the image. Now project laser beams from points on the edge of the
image area to the corresponding points on the subject. The beams cut
the hood and you end up with that hood shape, which is the most you can
shield the lens without causing vignetting.

There are another two behind the van. Perhaps adding another would
have blocked the pavement as well.

Ar. I was thinking of the petal shape in comparison with a rectangular
lens hood, rather than a circular one; unusual, admittedly, but almost
certainly the last lens hood I used to bother with.

Yes, you are right of course. I suppose its an age thing, I still tend to
rate a tel no as more important than an internet web address.

Well if somebody parked on a motorway so that car drivers were forced to get
out and walk 5yds thus delaying their journey by about 30secs we would never
hear the end of it :-)
