Every spin class that I have ever seen use Shimano SH-51 SPD cleat system that is common on mountain bike shoes. Sometimes people have Shimano SPD pedals on road bikes too, so you need to check what type of cleat you have. Most of the gym spin pedals are also set up so you can flip the pedal over if you dont' have the proper cleats, and then you can use any kind of shoe you want on either this pedal platform, or better yet, a pedal platform with an old fashioned "cage" that you slip your foot in to and tighten down with a strap. If it has the cage, then you can use your pull up muscles as well as your push down muscles during one revolution.

Here is a picture of the Shimano SH-51 single release SPD cleats. You can also use the Shimano multi release SPD cleats---SH-56. But confirm what the setup is with the instructor before you buy something.

Depending on what kind of road shoe you have and what kind of bolt pattern they have, you may be able to attach these SPD cleats to your road shoe, but then your road shoes wouldn't be set up for riding on your real bike.
