After reading an article about different butters the other day, I purchased
a half-pound of Plugra.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plugr%C3%A1 - I notice that it is possible to
make alfredo sauce without cream (according to this article) using Plugra.
However, I'm not too fond of its taste (DH likes it fine).
I'm wondering if anyone uses Kerrygold butter and if they buy it often, and
what they think of it.
I've not seen this butter on the East Coast (USA); but I've not looked
seriously for it. Maybe Trader Joe's or Wegmans or WholeFoods?
Thanks.

But Wikipedia did insert a "dubious - discuss" note after mentioning doing
an alfredo using Plugra but no cream -- perhaps because the classic alfredo
doesn't use cream. I've not yet tried Plugra, but my guess is that it might
well taste better as a spread but that it wouldn't make much difference in a
sauce. I use Kerrygold (available at Shaw's) as a spread but it doesn't make
a difference in cooking as far as I can taste.
Anyone else have thoughts on Plugra, Kerrygold and the other premium
butters, without starting another one of those alfredo threads?

You may be off base if you look for it in the dairy section. Local
stores here keep it in the deli section, along with the fresh cheeses.

I'm sorry I didn't say that. It was in the section where I (finally)
found creme fraiche. There were specialty items there and it was
right by the cheese department. It was definitely not by the
Land O Lakes. That was Wegmans. Plugra I find by the other
butter in my usual supermarket, but I don't think they carry
Kerrygold.

I buy it fairly often, Dee Dee. Good stuff, IMO.

Maybe this will help? (This is their "where to buy" in the USA list)

I don't know if it is the same stuff, but we can buy Kerrygold here and it
is fine. I usually go for the organic stuff but if there is none I would be
happy to buy Kerrygold.

Thanks, CC, I had gone to this site. It was hard to take too seriously, as
they listed "Lowe's" which is a huge hardware, and as far as grocery items,
well, maybe they have a mop and broom ;-)
I 'am' going to check at the regular what you would call 'upscale' markets
"whenever" I get to them.

Yes, Plugra I was able to find at my regular shopping market. I figured it
would be as fresh as possible; however the out-of-date was a YEAR in advance
of now!
Thanks to all. Next trip to CT, DH will stop at Wegman's, and will consider
another brand perhaps of organic.
Organic is what I'm 'really' looking for.
Although organic has come to not mean what it used to be, according to what
I've been reading.

So funny -- thanks, I'd never heard of "Lowe's" as a grocery store. I
thought that very odd when I read that.

There are Lowe's grocery stores too. Not the same company.
http://www.lowesfoods.com/ It is pretty upscale.

I've seen Kerrygold in the stores here in Maine. Shaw's, I think...probably
during the period when they were owned by Sainsbury, or by whomever owns
Sainsbury.
If you want a good butter, try Kate's. It has won first place in
national/international butter competitions.

Thanks. That looks great. Thanks for the link. It will be easy to
remember the little girl's picture, instead of a cow moo-ing or grazing.
There is a Stop and Shop that DH "stops and shops" at in his travels to and
fro CT. We should be able to find this.
