Simple RANS Stay Dry Seat Answer: Large Shower Cap. I bought a large shower cap at Costco and keep
it tucked under the seat. When it rains, I just slip it on over the seat. I don't slide much. If I
know I'm going to ride a lot in the rain, I remove the RANS black cover, slip the shower cap over
the rubber form and reinstall the black cover.

A shower cap is my solution too. I get a non-garish one and put it right over the lycra cover. If,
however, I'm caught without one or the pad gets wet in spite of my efforts, I take the pad off the
seat and stand it in a corner. The water will drain out faster that way.

My experience says that the yellow 1999 RANS foam will take considerably longer than a day or two to
dry out. With wringing of the foam several times a day it took mine over four days to dry out.

The new RANS lightweight seat pad is a closed cell foam and does not absorb water. It can, however
hold a small lake of rain so you have to drain it before settling into it, and it does leave the
bonded cover material wet.

Thanks Tom. That's true, and even a good sweatin' on a weekend ride will moisten it enough to make
riding to work in dockers a sporting proposition for a day or two, it seems. Thus I'm wondering
about the Burley base in particular. Just curiosity at this point, but ya never know, given the
proper motivations, well... let's just say I could see getting a dark blue Django :-)

My "newest" bike, however, is a mid 60's Raleigh-built Hercules. It sort of found me and while this
is the first DF I've been on in 2 years, wow, what a sweet ride. (It came with the original front
tire, and the "JOHN BULL" brake pads are present and functional). The more I look at it the more I
find to admire. (Simple yet elegant lugged frame, full fenders, good clearance for tires, tremendous
adjustability, casual angles, 32 spokes front, 40 rear, 3 cross and 4 cross respectively so the
spoke lengths are the same, it just goes on. and on. Wow.).

Of course, it was odd feeling the seat's nose "there" after a multi year absence, and the pressure
on my hands was surprising, and after 10-12 miles (a computer on this bike would be obscene) my
butt's sore. But still. Rode for a few miles with a friend on a Tailwind (how's that for a n odd
couple), and we were clocking along at 14-16 - per his 'puter. Nifty. One of the best things of the
20th century - the English 3 speed.

Burley's Corbins are okay but not as comfortable as a RANS base. I replaced my Corbin with a RANS seatbase this year. Much better but I also notice absorbtion. But I have a really simple fix.

I wrap the foam in plastic and put the seat cover on over that. This works exceptionally well.

I wrapped a garbage bag over the foam, under the lycra. Keeps it totally dry. In fact, I keep my recumbent locked outdoors all the time. The lycra does not hold water well, so even when it rains, it stays reasonably dry, believe it or not. And now that it is winter here in Toronto, the snow brushes off no prob.

I used to put a bag over the seat when I parked, to keep the foam dry.
Now that I have the foam wrapped in plastic, this is no longer an issue.

It took me a lot of seaching newsgroups to find this solution.
