Starting out equipment??

Bicycle pump is an absolute must if that's something you haven't considered. Wedge bags can usually be had via online bike supply stores relatively cheaply. Personally, in my bag I carry a spare tube, CO2 inflator with 3 canisters, glueless patches, 2 tire levers, copy of driver's license, copy of insurance card, a baggie with some change and a couple of bills (also great for a liner if you slice a tire), and my cell phone.

I don't know of any hard and fast rules of what you have to carry, besides a helmet. Hydration devices such as water bottles or a Camelback type device are almost a necessity, definitely required if you are going to ride any real distances. Gloves are nice to have on if you crash. A seat pouch that is large enough to carry a spare tube, patch kit, CO2 inflator with an extra cartridge, two or three tire levers, and a multi-tool would be nice. Some people like carrying a mini-pump instead of a CO2 inflator It would be even better if there is room for identification, keys, and a cell phone. Mine is expandable so that I can stash an apple or pear in there if I want. If you like to stop at attractions along your route, such as museums or nature centers, a seat bag with a quick release is nice so that you can take it with you when you are away from the bike. This is important to me since I carry my wallet in my seat bag when I ride.

Cycling clothes are not required but are nice if the budget will allow it. Most cycling jerseys will wick perspiration away from the skin and have handy pockets on the back that are about the right size for carrying extra water, small food items, etc. Cycling shorts are usually padded and have chamois sewn in to prevent chafing to the sensitive areas. If you are like me and do not look good in a pair of tight spandex shorts, there are baggy shorts available.

Of course you probably already know that you need shoes that will accept the cleats that go with your pedals. A cycle computer is nice if you care about how fast an how far you have gone. Most are fairly inexpensive and they are really useful if you are going to keep a log of your riding experiences.

Pepper spray.

Also, consider getting padded shorts if you got a road bike with a minimalist saddle. Your butt muscles aren't strong enough to keep your sitbones from getting sore. You can wear the shorts as underwear if you like.

Something tells me (like spelling the thing that goes on the wheel tyre) that he's not from around here 😉 (of course that doesn't necessarily mean he isn't riding in these parts)

I am a mininmalist. I carry a tube, small patch kit, co2, very small pump for emergencies, my cell phone & cards -credit, drivers, medical, house keys, and an energy bar. A raincoat if it might rain, hand warmers/extra gloves if its very cold.
