Seems like a mixed message. The original statement that biological
passports will be required is at odds with the statement that as long
as Di Luca has a license he will allowed to defend his title. I do
not believe a passport is required to keep the racing license. I
    think everyone will have questions:

Will a biological passport be required?
How does the Giro define a biological passport?
Since this requirement is outside the UCI rules, are these rules
written down or is the Giro making them up as they go along?

I like the biological passport idea but think it should be a uniform
requirement across all races. Not one for UCI races, one for the Giro
and still another for the Tour de France and still another for
the.......This is just another problem caused by the split between the
    UCI and the grand tours.

I wonder if anyone will try to sabotage riders by getting them to
    unknowingly ingest illegal substances?

That, or penciling in another name on a pee bottle?

That's long been a concern of pro cyclists. If I was making a living
off riding my bike and could afford it, I wouldn't eat anything with
ingredients that were not selected and prepared by someone I trusted
with my livelihood. If those guys do actually EAT....

With that said, a local racer (and likeable guy) was just banned for 2
years because of what he said were tainted over-the-counter, name
brand supplements containing trace amounts of clomophine. This isn't a
new situation either. I don't live in his shoes, so I don't know if
it's true, but that's what he says. With supplements lacking FDA
approval, plus occasional reports of peanut dust finding their way
into other foods and threatening the three million allergic Americans
    (http://www.allergyescape.com/peanut-allergy.html), I'm inclined to
believe that it's at least possible.

For myself, I had a sinus infection a couple of months ago and was
prescribed Astelin. I didn't find out until after running through the
dosage that it's a steroid. FTR, alas, no reportable sudden blast of
    performance.
