switch to michelin tires and get a tire boot from park tools; carry your spare tubes; inflators and tire boot on your person; don't leave anything you might need in a saddlebag where it could get swipped without your knowing.

What looks more out of place on a sporty bike-- a decent set of fenders or a beleaguered guy in a filth-caked rainsuit? Maybe it's the bike that looks out of place.

Haven't a clue if this applies to your situation or not. On PBP I carried a Continental Supersonic tire 700x20 in between the seatstays below the wedge seatbag. Lightest and smallest tire I could find. Wrapped it in duct tape and held in place with a toe strap. Glad I had it when the puncture prone Vittoria Evo Corsa CX Open 700x25 rear tire flatted for the 4th time at mile 600. If your bike has wishbone seatstays you will have to find a different place to carry the tire. I've seen people tape spare tires to the underside of downtubes.

In my case, usually yes. I hate that [censored], especially when combined with cold temperatures. Especially especially when it means getting foul and gritty instead of just getting wet. But maybe that's just me.

I have bikes with tires as narrow as 32mm (1.25"😉 and as wide as 75mm (3"😉. The widest slick tire I use is about 68mm (2.7"😉 wide. The widest 700c slick tire I use is 60mm (2.35"😉 wide. i have never carried tools or spares. lucky i guess, but you could always get one of those tool boxes in a drink bottle, or use an old drink bottle, then you just need 2 carbon drink holders.

butbutbut, that creates a lump between one's back and the seat back. Proper jerseys (like the ones I have from Bouré [1]) have the pockets on the side where they belong. 🙂

Even the smallest 700c folded tire (Continental Supersonic 700x20) is more than I want to carry in a jersey pocket. And the tire is somewhat permanently mounted to the frame so you don't have to remember to carry it on every ride.

Problem with that Carl is I use a proper frame pump, Blackburn FP-1. It goes on the underside of the top tube. And the frame bag also interferes with the water bottle on the seattube. For those who use mini pumps for some reason, Jandd does make a long bag that hangs from the underside of the toptube, positioned closer to the headtube so it does not interfere with the seattube water bottle.

Fenders? You can get them for even the "raciest" of bikes now, and they work wonders. As to looking out of place, they probably would look better than your appearance would be after riding in the rain without them.

I put an old tire in the seat bag, one whose tread is thin enough that I would not leave it on the bike full-time, but substantial enough to make it home if I need a spare. So far I have never used my spare tires, but others I've ridden with have used it.

i guess it won't help my image much but i have to admit that i commute to work in a cotton/polyester shirt and jeans. then walk around the office spreading the aroma. surprisingly that STILL does not deter some fresh folk from stopping by my cube. RR2P does not fit in a jersey pocket anyway.
i just looked for supersonic reviews: the reviews claim it's flat prone. they also claim that it's a clincher so i wonder if i'm looking at the right tire. Not sure what the heck is a clincher, is that something that involves gluing? how do you glue a tire by the roadside?
as for evo corsa cx: it seems to cost about 2 times more in the US compared to the UK assuming around $2 per british pound.

do you have picks of the mounting hardware? there ain't no eyelets on the top tube 🙂 i hate my minipump even though it occasionally provides an opportunity for the upperbody workup -> goodwill or inlaws.

thanks, i think i'll remove the RR2P that survived the two incher and use it as a spare. i don't like it being red anyways and this way the risk of being labeled pinkie would be lower 🙂
