  1. This morning Mr White Van Man thought a sharp right-hander on a narrow lane with six hedges would be
a great place to overtake. He had to work at it because I was a good way out from the edge, to deter
Mr WVM from doing just that while still allowing me to avoid oncoming traffic.

I didn't notice him staring to overtake because I wasn't looking behind at that point - it was such
an obviously stupid place to try that I really didn't believe he'd try it. Silly me!

So the inevitable happened and Mr Red Peugeot came round the bend from the other direction. Mr WVM
did not have ABS, his bonnet had just crept into my peripheral vision, when he hammered the brakes
and went sideways towards me with a Dramatic Skid Noise Effect.

Luckily Mr Red Peugeot had (a) ABS and (b) his wits about him.

I still don't really know how I got away with it, judging from the feel of my legs I think I must
have outrun the van. I certainly ended up in front of it.

Moral: overtaking on blind bends when the road is wet and slippery is Pretty Damn Stupid. Although
quite why Mr WVM would need to be taught this rather obvious lesson is a bit of a puzzle.

  2. Glad you aren't hurt, Guy.

Sometimes there just isn't anything else we can do to be visible and safe, when a complete and utter
tw*t inb a motorised cage decides to risk not only his/her life & limb, but that of those around
them. I feel a sudden urge for eugenics coming on...

How do you fit six hedges on a narrow lane ;-)

I emptied a whole airzound on one tonight as it turned left on me, with no option, brakes full on,
to follow it to the left

The thing is, there really are some insane people out there behind the wheel. Not just stupid, but
nasty. While most drivers will put up with 'obstruction' reluctantly if they have to, a small
minority are just GBH on wheels. If I suspect there's someone like that behind me, usually indicated
by following ridiculously close, revving of engine etc., personally I'd usually rather slow and pull
right over so as to let them pass and get it over and done with as quickly as possible, than try to
force them not to, and in doing so 'force' them to try something really dangerous and unexpected.

Some days I wish for a set of Boadicea knives on my front wheels - in your part of the world you
might get away with it as part of your "cultural heritage" :-)

While I agree with being aware and looking after your own safety, that course of action just
reinforces for them the benefits of their methods. I tend to hold my line but stay alert and
prepared to take appropriate action for my own safety if needed.

Agreed. Never defer to bullies. They are mostly cowards anyway (the motor car is of course an ideal
way for cowards to assert themselves, since you are anonymous inside a car). I take the primary
riding position, which at least gives me somewhere to go if Captain Clueless decides to demonstrate
his superior driving skills by overtaking with millimetres to spare.

I'm not just talking of ordinary bullies though, who abound in numbers. I mean people apparently
bordering on the criminally insane, in charge of a ton of metal travelling at speed who'd sooner
risk leaving three families fatherless than wait a few seconds because one of them happens to be a
cyclist, who can usually, although maybe not without inconvenience, find room to give way safely if
he wants. I just think there may be times when discretion is the better part of valour, albeit that
it is rare that things are that bad. Sometimes of course, which is mostly what happens to me when I
encounter these, you don't realise just how crazy the person behind is 'till they actually start
overtaking in places where you would never believe that they would.....

It is really hard to tell the difference between that dsort of person and the run-of-the-mill
arrogant jackass who thinks their [censored] wil shrivel if they don't beat you to the next traffic jam,
or the imbecile who decides that he will wait 30 seconds and then overtake whatever is coming the
other way because otherwise they might not get the best parking space, and indeed all the other
idiots. There is a continuum of idiocy.

Oh course - you are female, ergo, you are *sensible.

*Splorfle*! Me? Sensible? How *dare* you! :-)

it's just that van drivers do tend to be predominantly of the male persuasion for some reason.

A more sensible distinction would seem to be "normal driver" and "stressed out executive always
late for the next meeting, in flash exec-mobile, of either gender". We're seeing more female
    execs nowadays.

Saw one on the phone last night - the big glowing handset gave it away, as well as the quite erratic
steering. It was in a supermarket car park though, so legal or not being on private land? Also no
police around. The steering and general control was quite erratic.

PS - enough radiation down there to sterilise, or give 99% chance of sterilisation if not for
suitably heavy lead plating in the right place, is quite painful. You won't get WVM on his bike
for a while, perhaps even if its a recumbent.

Perhaps an alternate route would be something like ifosfamide in the coffee at appropriate road-side
cafes. Hopefuly its side effects will just be put down to a bad day for food hygiene. Even then, WVM
is likely to have decided never to eat/drink at such a place again before enough is given to be
    effective. :-P
