I have heard that use of a turbo trainer can damage a bike frame and that carbon fibre frames are particularly susceptible to this. I only have the one bike and its carbon fibre. Obviously I am not that concerned about sweat on the frame as the resulting corrosion is a non starter cos carbon fibre doesn't corrode (though I guess the components could if I didn't religiously wipe the bike down after every sess). What else could cause damage and if so what type of damage or is this all a lot of cobblers?
I am primarily using the turbo trainer not for speed training at this point but longish spinning sessions to build up some stamina as the weather sucks and also for weight loss. I typically do longish moderate speed sssions in lowish gears (around 95 RPM though it varies). The trainer is a Tacx Fortius. I use the real life videos quite a lot to keep me amused.
Oh yes I nearly forgot I am still a fat blerk on a bike around (200ibs).

Get a set of rollers. Easy to learn, makes you a better cyclist(gotta ride inna straight line), makes the time pass WAY faster, won't hurt your bike in any way.
While I agree with the rollers idea that Peter suggested for the same reasons, you should not have any problems with using your carbon frame bike with your trainer as long as you follow their directions. There was a fear in the past that the amount of flexing that some riders put on their frames while on a trainer could result in failure of the frame, however, it appears now that this fear is not founded on fact. By the description of your use, you wouldn't have any problems even if the fear was justified.

Many thanks for the information. I was getting a bit worried about this - the frame was expensive. I would quite like to get some rollers (rode on them many years ago and enjoyed them) but am not sure that I have the room or the ability to justify yet more stuff to my better half :-<
